Why are people more emotionally drawn to pieces than others?

I can feel so intensely emotionally towards a piece, and others can easy dismiss it as nothing great, this also happens vice versa. Would it be because music is largely polysemic and individuals try to make sense of music by relating it to events?

Also, although I don't consider myself to be a religious person, listening to medieval chants with religion as focus, also makes me feel emotional.

To me, this recording is just... amazing - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBxL5Mi0mH0

I often wonder if people who only know popular music experience the same depth of emotion in it that those of us here find in classical music.

Pizza is one of the four food groups in this house. Not many other foods get their own phone book entry.

Good criterion!

My LP's (yes, LP's) ha are alphabetized by composer, except for some pianists who have their own sections at the beginning: Horowitz, Rubinstein, and (ahem) smile Brailowsky -- and in that order.

I feel exactly the same. I am not religious either but I love Gregorian Chants too.

I wonder even more if some people who know both popular and classical experience both with the same depth of emotion. I don't know if I could put it exactly that way, but I know that both affect me deeply.

Virtually all of today's pop music makes me sick. It is my view that the art in pop is no longer present due to it's sole purpose, which is to sell. To me it's just a product, no different than the things advertised in infomercials. This doesn't mean I hate today's music. I think there are plenty of good artists today that don't fall under the 'pop' category. But as for the Lady Gaga's, the Justin Biebers, the LMFAO's, etc., these are all trash IMO.

I wasn't thinking of today's popular music although I think that has its merits. But it has a completely different purpose than the greatest classical music.

I agree. It is unbelievable that some teens faint, scream, cry to just see these people for 10 seconds.

There have been teen idols for at least the last 60 years and probably long before that. Why should one expect that what a teen, especially a young one, finds appealing to be the same as what an older person finds appealing? Why would one assume the reasons an adult listens to music are or should be the same as reasons why a much younger person listens to music?

IMO what makes just about " anything" amazing and capable of stiring emmotion is the quantity of genius and hard work that went into its production. I would estimate that these two factors are usually present in the ratio of ten to ninety percent respectively.

I think if I were tied to four horses and about to be drawn to pieces, I would be pretty emotional about it no matter what music were played.
