Well, I do own a Yamaha U3, if that means anything. And I do like it. I also like the Kawai uprights too though. I guess what pushed me in towards the Yamaha was they are cheaper and more plentiful on the used market, and I like the fact that you can play very softly on them but still hear the notes very clearly. The darker sound of the Kawai is less clear and bell-like at the softest dynamic. I do a lot of my playing during the night and this allows me not to wake the neighbours. The other side of this is that the Yamahas probably don't have quite as much tonal range as the Kawais, but I'm not too bothered by that. I'm planning to buy a grand in the future for that sort of thing. For now, I'm more than happy with what my U3 does.

ando has touched on the greatest asset of all Yamaha pianos to my mind - and that is clarity. But I also think the notion that they are bright is outdated. They come in all flavours. I have just got myself a Kawai upright (a modest K3) and like it very much. I find the tone thicker perhaps and yes, maybe darker. But again, that is probably a generalisation.

Probably get more and possibly better comments in the piano forum. This particular forum is for discussion of digitals.

I agree - but I suppose he may be talking about digitals here? OP needs to clarify and then if necessary post on the piano forum.

I don't think the OP is actually around any more. When you get ambiguous, very general, possibly misplaced questions like this an no further clarifications, the poster typically doesn't care about the thread.

I agree with the sentiment, though. I will never understand how anyone can end up typing in all caps. As far as I know, that has never been standard practice, ever. Even when people used to typset stuff by hand using little blocks of metal, they used correct capitalization.

I think telegrams often ended up presented all in uppercase. could also explain grammar issues stop

Otherwise presumably it reflects practises in languages other than English.

Those rare occasions when I am forced to respond by SMS I not only spell out every word completely but I capitalize as well.

No, no no, that's much too modern for our Dave. Here's Dave's mobile:

Guys, I own a mobile phone, not the latest generation to be sure but I can text. I just find it a waste of my time. Also, I don't like being available at every moment to be disturbed.

I see a trend where the general public seems to be getter dumber. I try to hold up my end by writing complete sentences replete with capitalization and punctuation. My only concession in writing is the spell checker since that occurs automatically.

In music and writing, it really does seem that power outages separates the men from the boys. wink

Too true. I've just sold a few bits and pieces on eBay and the number of questions I got asked where the answer was clearly and explicitly mentioned in the item description beggars belief. It's a combination of laziness and quite striking stupidity. And in a general sense it is getting worse, without question.

Dave, EssBrace: I think you're perceptions are correct. But I wonder ... Is the level of stupidity really greater today? Or does it just seem so because we read communications from more (dopey) people than we might have years ago, pre-Internet?

My wife had one of those old phones (20 years ago).
[Linked Image]

We kept it as a relic.
About ten years later I brought to work with me, just for laughs.
When we went out to lunch I took it with me and set it on the table.
When the waiter (a young guy) came by, he asked: What's that thing? smile

You may be right Mac. But what is so disappointing is the way everything has been dumbed down. Maybe it isn't new actually. But it is very depressing. When you look at the way news issues are treated by governments and the media it seems to me that any coverage or discussion is deliberately intended to exclude intelligent debate. One recent example here in the UK is the Jimmy Savile scandal (dead celebrity accused of sex offences against teenagers if you are wondering).

The good old English mob mentality is in full swing and there is not one iota of intelligent informed opinion getting through to the masses. And that is coming from our parliament downwards. Add in the tabloid press hysteria and to be honest it's enough to make you want to emigrate. But maybe all societies are the same.

People just seem to pedal the cliches and nonsense they've been fed by the media. I don't see much evidence of independent thought going on - clearly there is but those people (and I conceitedly include myself here) just simply have no voice whatsoever anymore.

Somewhat off topic I grant you!....

Yes, off-topic ... but interesting.

I still maintain, though, that this is not new, especially with regard to the media. I can remember that, as a child, I was surprised to see things on TV documentaries that seemed dumbed-down and even wrong ... and that from the vantage point of a ten-year-old.

But don't despair. As bad as you think it is in the UK, it's worse here in America.

Television here is for the brain-dead. TV news lacks depth and focuses heavily on pop-culture. There is no analysis. And there is no accountability: The media broadcasts mis-information that is patently wrong. Not just distortions and opinions. BALD LIES!

I don't know what you think of the BBC, but (judging from the bits we get of the BBC) it's heads above anything originating here.

As for the Internet and related mass-media ... it seems that EVERYONE now has the microphone (meaning: keyboard). Too many people talk too much, with much too little worth saying (or reading).

And you wonder why no one can play ?!! They spend half their life devoting time and energy with these things.

Exactly!
