Spoiler alert: the hurricane wins.

Last Thursday October 25th, my newly-restored and newly-purchased 1953 Baldwin Acrosonic was delivered to my newly-rented rehearsal studio. Four days and four feet of water later, here's my new piano:

I'm pretty sure it will be covered under my renter's insurance, but it's still a rotten way to go for a newly-restored piano. My tech is coming tomorrow to take a look at it, but I'm guessing it's a total loss. The action got really wet, and it's totally unplayable as it is. For now, it's back to my digital piano. On the bright side, I and everyone I know got through the storm without injury or substantial property damage ... besides my new piano.

You need a separate renter flood insurance to cover rising water. Normal renters insurance is not for all perils.

Oh, I am so sorry to hear about this, Coldsalmon! Although rationally I know it doesn't make any difference, the fact that the flood happened only FOUR FRIGGING DAYS after you got your piano delivered is just, well, painful.

Sorry. Hope your insurance covers it. On the bright side, that's if the sun ever comes out again, a better piano might be waiting for you around the corner. Best of luck.

Update: The piano is indeed totaled. The sound board warped, the bass bridge separated from the soundboard, the bass strings lost their tone, and the keys swelled. There were more issues, but these are the major ones. Repair would cost much more than the purchase price, and would probably result in a very diminished sound. It was a great little piano, and it sounded freakishly good for its size. I preferred certain aspects of its tone to many larger pianos.

On the bright side, I got the full value back from my insurance (minus my deductible). Unfortunately, the rehearsal studio was also totaled so I have nowhere to put a new piano even if I bought one. I'm stuck with my digital for the time being, but I'm counting my blessings.

Oh man, that's awful. Acrosonics are awesome little spinets. I played one that was a dead ringer to yours at the local dealer, and it was a very impressive little piano.

Well, at least we know the important things made it through the storm OK!

Very sad. I grew up playing a 1953 Acrosonic. Hate to see one bite the dust !! On the other hand, you are wise to count your blessings - and at least you still have the digital.
