Here's a link to a video of a nice little Yamaha with a Diskclavier that I tuned today for the Baptist Home.

Hi Ryan,

Thanks for the video...did you tune the piano by ear or with an ETD, or both? I can't tell from the video, what is the size and model # of the Yamaha?

It is a GB1-G Series. I tuned the piano with Tunelab using the calculated tuning curve that Tunelab determined it needed and then layered the EBVT3 on top of that. The video and sound quality are a little better if you click on the button at watch it in HD. Takes a little longer to load. It is a little distorted because as you probably know when you upload a video from an iPhone, it compresses the video to reduce the size of the file. Nevertheless, a pretty good recording for a smartphone I guess.

You're getting there with your tuning Ryan but, ear training is also extremely crucial.

No offense intended Ryan but I hear a lot of out of tune notes, including octaves and unison's. wink

That's OK, Jerry. I'm not easily offended...I teach teenagers all day! LOL. Were you listening in standard definition or high definition? What speakers are you using? I noticed a big difference when I listen on my laptop as opposed to my nicer speakers on my desktop. As I said before the iPhone compresses videos when uploaded thus reducing the quality. Also, as any sound technician will tell you, the piano is one of the hardest instruments in which to get a good recording. I think maybe some of what you are hearing is just distortion.

Hi Ryan,

I have Bose speakers and listened with my desktop computer. The Bose speakers are good quality and produce great sound. smile

Sorry but, no, it's not distortion. It's out of tune. That's why I was stressing the importance so strongly in other posts about people that do not have ear training and the crucial necessity for it.

Try tuning the piano's unison's strictly by ear only. That's what I do.

Here is a recording of one 3 stringed unison that I did a while back now. http://soundcloud.com/jerry-groot/recording249820049-3gpp-2nd

I have excellent speakers as well. Too many unisons are out of tune. You cannot tune unisons with tunelab, you have to tune them by ear. All the best though, tuning is not easy, takes time and practice.

Agreed, out of tune unisons, especially in the middle, and the treble is very sharp, piercingly sharp. The scale on the Gb 1 is better than the Ga 1, but it's still a difficult scale for Tunelab to work with. This morning, I pulled up a previous file on a Steinway L and ran a Tunelab temperament F3-F4. Before proceeding, I checked it by ear and found wild 4ths, though the 5ths and 3rds were ok. I re measured the piano, and the new measurements worked much better. This is an example of why ears must be used along with an ETD. For good results, the ETD tuning must be verified aurally - and corrected when needed. When the ETD is wrong, you have to catch it.
