I recently, bought a used Yamaha P202 from a dealer but the piano was damaged during delivery. The seller came to my house to patch it up with Elmer's Wood Filler, but the repair looks ugly and feels like it would eventually fall off.

I'd like to get a ballpark figure of how much it would cost to fix it properly. My Yamaha P202 has a mahogany satin finish. The damage is in the bottom back right corner, 1/2 x 1/2 x 1 inch in size.

If I'm asking this in the wrong forum, I'd appreciate if you can re-direct me to the write place. Thanks.

You might ask a local furniture store who they use for repairs like that. It is not something which is specialized for pianos.

As someone who builds fine furniture, I would concur with the previous poster - there is nothing unique to a piano when it comes to repairs of the case such as you describe.

I would suggest a couple of different approaches depending on your location and personal preference:

1.) There is a national franchise called something like "Furniture Medic" that can perform such repairs. I have heard generally good things about them.

2.) Call an antique dealer that deals in furniture and ask for recommendations. Repairs to antiques are usually quite involved and require a skilled person to do them.

3.) Look up "Furniture Repair" or for a company that does furniture refinishing in your area.

Is the dealer going to cover the cost? If they are reputable I would hope that they do. Just slapping some filler on the damage hardly seems appropriate in my opinion.

I'd first ask the dealer if he will pay for a better repair. He is responsible and should do it well and correctly. If he can't he should cover the cost of a more skilled person doing it. If they refuse, tell them you will mention them by name at PW and will call the BBB.
