Meet the Superhumans
-by Emma John

I came across this article randomly, and was a little surprised to find Yuja Wang listed as "the pianist with the fastest fingers in the world." That's an interesting assertion considering I don't know how you measure the speed of a musician's fingers as you would 1) the speed of a tennis player's serve 2) the clock time of a racer, or 3) a concrete number of memorized digits.. And if one actually wanted to measure such a thing as finger/hand speed or playing speed, how could you thoroughly evaluate #-of-notes-per-second without somehow accounting for accuracy of notes, acceleration, dynamics etc. I think if you limit it to chromatic scales, trills, tremolos, arpeggios, octaves... you would likely have a different pianist winner for each technical demand.

I also wonder if Yuja ever has to tell herself as she's trying to fall asleep at night, "ugh just leave me an my fast fingers alone. I'm a good pianist."

What do you think?

music isn't a competition. Playing fast isn't like a weight lifting competition, the more the better... When you have the technical ability to play beyond a certain speed, and to play with a certain amount of dexterity anything above those levels won't make much difference.

I don't see any problem with measuring 'fastest fingers'. key strokes per second?

But as you say there's some questions left open there.

Single notes? Octaves? Chords? Jumps? What kinds of passages with which kinds of notes?

There's no obvious way to measure speed.

I daresay that Cziffra has faster fingers than Wang, and is more interesting to listen to on top of it!

IMO, this is similar to Jlo's $27mil insurance policy on her butt or Dolly Parton's $600K insurance policy on her breasts: it doesn't really mean anything, but it's effective at increasing public attention and perception of superiority. Whether this "ranking" is explicitly sanctioned by Yuja or created by a third party, it's likely to help her visibility among the casual classical consumer.
