A friend of mine came into a used Estonia grand, the studio grand (168 cm), for a very good price. I know all the people involved and the man who owned the Estonia grand wanted to get rid it because he never played it; my friends needed a new\newer grand for their son who is studying at the conservatory, and this worked out great for everyone.

We were at their house last night for a birthday party and I was asked to play the piano. Even though the piano might be 20 years old, I really have no idea how old it is, it appears to have received very little use. The action felt like it still wasn't broken in.

It was a very warm sounding piano and the bass response was just gorgeous. It makes you wonder how many grand pianos are sitting in living rooms just taking up space.

I'm a glass half-full guy, so I'd rather celebrate the connection of player and piano. It's like a pound puppy with a new family.

Actually this worked out incredibly well for my friends since I know they don't have a lot of money. They spent a fair amount of time looking for pianos and were disappointed either in the sound or ... the price.

If I had the space and if I had been approached about this particular piano, I would have snapped it up.

At least the piano found its way to someone who will really appreciate and enjoy it.

And everyone lived happily ever after.

Top pianos not being used is not that uncommon. I know of several cases where some very top makes had recently been bought smply for 'prestige' and whatever personal appeal.

In case of Estonia this is less common especially for those of older vintage. Virtually all of our first customers bought the at that time virtually unknown piano by its unique combination of musicality and price.

Today one could assume things being same but this not entirely so.

We really see many people now opting for Estonia by its musical appeal alone.

The last piano sold to someone who had the money for and could have easily afforded a piano of far higher price. In fact, we were straight up against that particular tier one piano in several "back-and-forth" comparisons.

Doubting this newly sold Estonia will have same fate in its new home like the one described above...

I had the same experience, I picked up an Estonia 168 for a song, it was like brand new, and the lady who had it, just wanted it out of the house since she did not have room for it. She also had no talents whatsoever when it came to playing the piano. The only thing I had to do besides give her the cash, was to play Dorak's Humoresque for her before the movers took over.

IIRC, Estonia pianos made after 1995 were generally exported to the US until just a few years ago. Instruments made prior to 1995 were made under the previous regime (state ownership) and prior to 1990 Estonia was a communist country. We hear very little about Estonia pianos from these earlier years, and the implication is that quality was not the manufacturing priority that it is now (and has been since Indrek Laul took over the company). It's good news to hear that a piano from this previous era can be a very nice instrument (assuming this is an old Estonia and not purchased in the last few years). I'd be curious to see if you can get a serial number and then we would know for sure exactly when this piano was made.

The 168 was introduced in the mid-late 90's. As Steve said, the serial number would pinpoint the year. Around 2001, they changed the fallboard logo, eliminating the lyre that was similar to Steinway's.

I just got an e-mail back from the friends who bought the Estonia grand, the number is 2212 ... and they mentioned that is was made in Russia. I haven't looked anything up at this point.

Both the earlier 5'4 grand and the 5'6 which came later were introduced long after Estonia had already become an independent nation. During the time of Soviet occupation, Estonia primarily built 9' concert grands for Russia's own music schools.

Here's a documentary about this:

That serial number is confusing, as I think it's more consistent with a 190 model from the 80's or 90's. When Estonia was part of the Soviet Union, it was often incorrectly called Russia.
