Welcome to the Pianoworld forum. Without some more information about both pianos it is not possible even to give an opinion. What model is the new Kawai grand piano? Presumably, the Hallet Davis is a used piano. You would also need to give details of the model or its length and information about its age and general condition.
Personally, I know nothing about Hallet Davis pianos, but others may be able to help you if you provide some more details.

Kind regards,
Robert.

Not necessarily - they're still selling new pianos under that name built in China.

The Kawai GM (5 foot) models are probably a slight "step up" in overall quality from the Hallet Davis.

Thank you, Carey for this information. When the OP stated "5 foot new Kawai vs Hallet Davis" I assumed that the Hallet Davis, by omission of the word "new", was used. It is an ambiguous statement.

Kind regards,

Robert.

My apologies. Both pianos are new, and yes, the Kawai is a GM model. They are roughly the same price--the Kawai is about $900 more.

GM-10 or GM-12 ????

Also - What is the length of the Hallet Davis ??

Is it a Signature model (HS) or Imperial model (HD) ??

Kawai GM-10 and Hallet Davis HD, 5'

Thanks for your opinions! The Hallet Davis sounds more muted to me, and the Kawai brighter. I like Kawai's (already own a G2), but I'm tempted to go with the Hallet Davis.

The two instruments are pretty much comparable in quality.

When you say the Hallet Davis sounds more "muted" - do you mean warmer??

Just curious - why are you downsizing from a 5'10" G2 to a 5' instrument? Or are you keeping the G2??

Good question! Not downsizing. I'm a teacher and I own a teaching studio with 5 teaching rooms. So it's a matter of budgeting and getting the best quality instrument that I can afford at this point in my business. My Petrof stays at home in my home studio for me and my children to use smile

Ask if the dealer will let you trade up on the new Hallet, Davis in the future. I service many of the 6'1" models, and they are quite impressive pianos for the money. Even the smallest 4'6" Hallet has a standard sostenuto pedal.
