Hi,

I'm looking for a upright piano. A dealer offer me a W.Hoffman H-114. It is supposed to have been in the shop some time but it is new. When I look for information about the brand, my surprise is that only two upright series exist: series V and series T. No hints about series H in the internet.

Apart from that, the serial number is 313xxx, and it does not match with the numbers that you can find in the lists (current ones are around 150xxx).

The dealer said that this one had made in Germany, while new Hoffmans are made in Cezch Republic.

Could anybody give information about this model and this strange issue?

Regards.

No, West Germany: Langlau. Same factory like Feurich and Euterpe. But the SN does not match.

Gregor:

Didn't Bechstein acquire the name W. Hoffmann and had it built by their then subsidiary Feurich later?

It shouldn't matter to assess piano but doesn't help to explain the mismatch of serial numbers either.

best

Hoffmann, Feurich and Euterpe were produced in Langlau, West Germany until 1993. Hoffmann pianos were probably (almost) identical to Feurich. Bechstein aquired the company and closed the factory in Langlau 1993. Hoffmann were produced in Seifhennersdorf then (in the factory that produced Zimmermann). Nowadays Hoffmann is produced in the Czech Republic by Bechstein Europe.

I was mistaken about the serial numbers: Since 1977 the Hoffmann serial numbers are Euterpe numbers (in 1977 SN 110.000, in 1988 137.200). Since 2001 Hoffmann is produced in Czech Republic and the SN in 2001 is 314.256. So, a piano with a number higher than that should be made in Czech Republic. Usually the SN at the end of a year is published, so it might be that a piano with a number slightly lower than 314.256 is indeed produced in Germany. At that time they had an output of 2.000 pianos per year, so the information about made in Germany (Seifhennersdorf) should be correct.
