Hi!

This night I’d like to give another round around the dark side of Vivaldi

Here we can listen to Sara Mingardo, singing one movement of the Stabat Mater. This recording is absolutely amazing, I couldn’t recommend it highly enough.

I have just uploaded the first movement of Cyril Smith Playing the Rachmaninov third Piano Concerto In D minor.

The first Englishman to record this, and a personal friend of rachmaninov, it was recorded in Dudley town Hall on the 22 and 23 January 1946. With The city of Birmingham orchestra.

After one performance Rachmaninov said It was the best rendition he had heard. (source: Phyliss Sellick, Mrs Cyril Smith and concert pianist in her own right)

Whilst this is only an opinion,It was Rachmaninovs opinion, and he wrote the concerto, so I believe he would know.

No masters are known to survive and this has consequently been taken from commercial shellac discs.

Anyways folks you heard it hear first, there was no version of Cyril playing this on youtube, there is now!

Just for you my friends.

Second and third movement coming right up, watch this space.

Excellent post, Rossy! I’ve loved this recording on Rachmaninov's third concert. I like it even more than the recording I have on this concert recorded by the composer. The tempo is similar, but I find more expressive the performance of Cyril Smith.

I’m glad to know that Rachmaninov said it was the best rendition he had heard.

Thanks for taking your time, Rossy.

Recaredo, sorry slight confusion there, Rachmaninov said that to cyril smith after one of his live performances , AND NOT this recording... Rach died in 1943. this was recorded in 1946.

Just needed to clear that up and be sure you dont get the wrong Idea.

I feel certain he would Recaredo. Cyril was a friend of Rachmaninov and on many occasions studied his scores with him. As professer of piano at the RCM cyril was regarded as the Rachmaninov specialist.

It would be such a shame to see such a talented man gradually fade into the ether?

He overcame a massive obstacle, on a flight to Russia at the start of a concert tour, the plane developed a pressurisation problem, and cyril suufered a major thrombosis, it lost him the use of his left arm and hand for the rest of his life.

Undeterred he played duets for three hands with his wife phyllis selick, a concert pianist in her own right.
Folk wrote some music especially for three hands for them. Remarkable, and slightly sad at the same time.

Good morning Rossy! I'm not ignoring your posts. I'm eager to listen to them, but am at work and can't take the time. I've blocked out a chunk of time for later today to listen uninterrupted.

Last night I sent you a note about it, but I guess it didn't get posted. Most likely operator error (me!). laugh

Must get back to work. I'll be back later today

Later

Only teasing Griffin, thought you may be snowed under. I certainly did not get a PM off you though.
Catch you later dude!

Ah! Here I sense another "BUNFIGHT" wink grin

My internet connection was sucking while I was home. Now I'm back to my institute smile

So many posts in between! I'm in the mid-ocean frown Anyway, Rossy deserves a prolonged furious clapping for what he's done and is doing for music spending his time!!! Hats off, Rossy thumb . We are all grateful to you for your dedication. And my regards and sincere thanks to pianojoy for sharing her story and beautiful tastes of music.

Once again, thank you very very much Rossy for sharing your rare collections of Cyril Smith! It's the best tribute you have paid to such a gifted pianist. I'm sure your hard work will not let him fade into ether.

Today (29 February!) Google has done a great job! They made a doodle for celebrating Gioachino Rossini's 220th birthday. I was not aware of his works. I've listened to one of his famous composition "The Barber of Seville" for the first time and I fell into love with it! Its an amazing composition. With my great honor and respect to him I'm posting it.

Hya Rupak, no, we dont have bunfights on RST, sometimes we tease each other a bit for fun!
But we never throw buns! it would be a waste of buns! I think we would prefer to eat them!
Thanks for the kind words over the cyril smith posts, much appreciated.
I love your Rossini post, especially on the anniversary of such a great man. HAPPY BIRTHDAY ROSSINI!!!

I have been very lucky yesterday, I met a lady who also plays piano, but she is more advanced than me.
I was complaining about my lack of skill in reading the bass clef and how I wished I had a good teacher.
Anyways, she came up with a suggestion, and this was it:

She has a lot of sheet music for duets, and suggested that I go round to her house where she will throw me in the deep end and get me to play the lower of the two parts in the duets.

This should ( If I work hard) make me much better in the lower registers and help me to read the bass clef better and faster.
And she is not working , so has all the time in the world, and also doesnt want to charge me anything because she thinks it will be fun...

This sounds most promising indeed, and it was just luck that I bumped into this stranger in the local library.
I really believe it will help me improve, and am looking forward to it.
