Andy, I'm not as old as fossils like you and Cathy, being just 58, but I'm sure we can make allowances. At least we all know the same old pop tunes!! smile Welcome.

That's a nice story about your piano, but you should know where it can lead. One year ago, almost on a lark, I asked for a cheapo keyboard to fool around on for my birthday. My wish was granted. By Christmas I had gone and bought the best digital piano I could find. Now I've begun looking longingly at the beautiful acoustic grands that people here have posted about. I'm already mentally moving furniture around in the house. (Unfortunately, I may have to get my wife new furniture first to seal the deal, or maybe a new deck and pool. wink Oh, well, sounds worth it to me.)

Anyway, welcome to the forum.

I've been playing piano since I was 8, fairly continuously, except for a few years in college and my twenties when I didn't have a piano. I traded my played-into-oblivion 1932 Hamilton Baldwin studio grand for a 1982 Yamaha C7 in 2004 and resolved to upgrade my skills. I started taking lessons again and practicing regularly, but can't say that I got disciplined enough to do my scales and exercises. Thus, I am forever mired in the early advanced repertoire. Fortunately, there's a lot of it. :-)

I write mystery novels for a living, so I get to be creative for both work and play. Piano, for me, is a lovely release at the end of a long day.

I guess it's time to delurk...

...42-year old, coming straight out of Portland, Oregon. I've recently been inspired to start practicing piano again. I've taken piano lessons for several years in my childhood, as well as sporadic piano lessons during the early twenties. Several years ago I invested in a stage digital piano for my apartment (Kawai MP8II) for the purpose of re-learning piano.

Unfortunately, I haven't mustered up the motivation to practice diligently until just recently. Perhaps being inspired by the "Grand Obsession" book (which I serendipitously discovered at a local bookstore a month ago) made me realize that it's never too late in life to learn how to play the instrument. At this point, I have more questions than answers, and even more questions about what kind of questions I will be asking in the future.

I've gleaned valuable information and tips on these forums on the past weeks, and I hope to add the AB forum as part of the regular learning routine (in addition to playing the piano, of course). Having played keyboards/synths in various rock bands over the past 15 years, I wanted to improve my keyboard skills, and getting back into learning the piano is something that I figured would help.

Hi!

I'm 23 and though I'm originally from California I'm living in New Mexico right now and going to college. I just started teaching myself piano about a month ago and progress is slow but I really enjoy it. I was inspired by three things: Stravinsky's petroucka, my mother who has always wanted to play, and my complete failure to grasp any of the information in my music theory class.

I like to listen to a lot of classical but i don't have the ear to recognize a lot of it, some of my favorites are Schubert, Debussy, and satie

On the modern side: my current obsession is with kanon wakeshima, a Japanese singer who plays the cello and sings pop/goth music.

right now i play on whatever piano the school has available to practice on and in the future i would like to learn guitar (rock, blues, latin, and classical), violin, and harp. maybe the panpipes too or some sort of folk flute.

I look forward to conversing with you all!

Also, I am starting to get into opera. I would love to teach myself some voice lessons next year and i am currently confuses as to whether i am a contralto or a tenor or countertenor. pavoratti's vesti la giubbi always gets me.

Also, Also: I'm currently going through the John Thompson's modern course for piano first grade. I love the kid-like feel to it and singing the songs along with my playing is fun.

Welcome, I'm also from Santa Fe smile This afternoon (Saturday, the 24th) there's a contra dance at the Oddfellows Hall, just south of the Deaf School on Cerrillos, for folks who are, um, 40 years younger than me laugh You'd fit right in. But the bonus, from a piano standpoint, is the live music, which for this dance is hosted by the premier dance piano player in this neck of the woods smile If you'd like some inspiration on how much fun it can be to play piano, that's the place to go. It's from 2 - 5, with a pot luck afterwards, and a regular dance following that from 7 to 10:30. The folks who are teaching/running it are a great set of people, too - fun, funny, welcoming, talented. Oh, and there's singing - they love to sing.

Any way, PW is a great place, too - hope you enjoy us smile

Hello. Been lurking for a while and decided to register. Been enjoying the forum a lot - lots of great info about Hanon, Alfred's, Liszt fingering, and books that has helped me in my auto-didactic endeavours. Glad that the one or two trolls who appeared were dealt with in a mature way, without a lot of flaming.

I am an adult (48) who decided to learn the piano (took a handful of lessons as a 5 yr old and then kicked and screamed to be allowed out with my friends), to go along with my drumming, the bass, and shredding on the guitar....I seem to be better at the keys than at the other things, even though I have been playing them longer! smile Sold my motorbike in order to buy Gear, though i still have a probably terminal case of Gear Acquisition Syndrome.

I live in Sweden, though I am a Finnish Jew by culture, have three shelter cats (supposedly for a short stay, but they seem to be permament - I get cats from the shelter that need to be socialised and calmed down, and then we find proper homes for them), have a long career as a theatre director behind me, and so can now spend my whole day playing/writing music....

I play a Kurzweil PC3, but am getting a Nord Stage in order to have a better harpsichord...

Look forward to getting to know you, even if I dont post a lot...

oh yes, I just declared myself graduated from Alfred's One, and will start Alfred Two on Monday....

best

saku

Hi Demian and sakari - always nice to have new faces around the ABF smile

Those kids always drag you into new things, huh Demian. Have fun.

L'shana tova, sakari. I'm not Jewish, but I sing in the choir at High Holy Days, so we're rehearsing once a week. Yikes! Next Weds evening is it! Happy new year!

OK, it looks like I made my intro in the wrong place - My Other intro! , as the ABF is probably a better fit for me!!!!

Anyhow, the concise version - My name is Ashley (Hoffy, if you like), from Adelaide Australia, I am 37 and haven't played properly since I was 16. My two daughters have started learning and I have all of a sudden started to feel the urge. Its all softly softly for me at the moment as I really wasn't that good in the first place, but I am really keen to work on it!

Cheers

Hi Everyone,
I'm new to this site and I have enjoyed reading your posts and gleaning info on digital pianos and acoustic as well. My name is Sandy aka mandosand, that is a nickname a friend gave me when I was learningto play the mandolin.
I always wanted to learn piano since I was about eight years old, but some how that didn't happen when I was a kid due to no room, money etc. then when I was 40 I bought my Kawai us 55 piano and started lessons before that I had bought a 100 yr old gutted player piano that could not be restored so I got my Kawai I was taking lessons but had to change profession and during my education for my new career I just could not stuff any more information in my brain so I quit playing ( wished I hadn't done that now) and now I am 63 and I hope I am not too old to learn piano . I have not played my piano and I hope it will tune up and be ok. Funny I have played the mandolin and guitar (badly) all this time for fun , I have worked in medical field for 20years know and I am looking forward to retiring to have more time for music . I have enjoyed learning about DP and I am going to get a Kawai cn33 thanks to some of your posts and I have tried one and I think it will be nice to use i like the action and I am looking forward to finding a teacher to help me rekindle my music skills and I guess it is never too late to learn. So thanks to all for your sharing and pianomonica all I can say is wow love your playing, thanks sandy

Greetings.

I learned piano as a youngster but was never really into it that much. When I was 25 I went to live in Kyrgyzstan as an English teacher. I loved the work there but found life outside work pretty boring. I couldn't even watch TV as I didn't speak the language. Anyway, one day I was walking down the street of Bishkek when I saw a second hand piano sitting in a shop window. I thought that would be a good way to fill in my spare time. I got the piano for a really good price.

I then found some music books teaching how to play the piano by learning chords. For the next three years I taught myself to play by improvising with chords. I got to a level where I could play most popular songs by improvising. I joined a band for ex-pats and played with them.

When I returned to Australia I decided I wanted a more classical training in piano. I did my fifth grade exam and passed that well. For the next ten years moving around a lot and not having a piano of my own I didn't get much chance to play.

A couple of years ago I bought my own house and one of the first things I bought for it was a piano. I am now 42 and studying for my 7th grade exam. I don't ever expect to be a concert pianist but I am just enjoying playing for the enjoyment of playing and how far I get I'm not too concerned about.

Hello,
I just found this website a few days ago, and I am thrilled to be a new member, and to find this forum! I live in Minnesota, and am the manager of communications and volunteers for a nonprofit human services agency.

I just turned 63, and recently bought a Yamaha P155 after a 35-year absence from piano playing. I had taken lessons for about 13 years, then quit practicing in college when I changed my major to journalism. I am practicing everyday now that I have a piano at home. I am really enjoying it.

I was afraid that I would never be able to play some of my favority recital pieces. However, they are slowing starting to come back. I am so excited that I might be good enough to record a few next year.

That is all for now. I will probably write a little more later. However, I still have a paid job I have to get back to.

Gee, griffin, can't you guys ever take a snow day?!? laugh

I lived in Mpls and area for about 13 years back thru the 70s. Skiied a lot at Buck Hill. I still think of Minneapolis fondly, tho I'm sure it's changed.

I came back to piano after 30+ years, too. That was 15 years ago and I'm playing more than ever. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do, and welcome to the ABF.
