Good question. I use that feature, too. For awhile a couple of us southwest-late-night-other-parts-of-the-world posters would have some chat fests when we discovered we were all online.

Another Mark had asked the question here a few days ago, but there were no replies (although there are 36 views). I am not bothered by the disappearance of this feature, but I can understand others might like it...

It's back!
On my view it's at the bottom of the right-hand column.
Yea, Frank!

Gee, I never knew you could stalk people like that . Maybe I'll go and snoop--but then others will know that I'm "checking who's online."

interesting, I never realized that the guests were so much more than the registered I was surprised when I first noticed that too. Another sign of it is how many more "views" there are than replies on almost every thread -- usually about 10:1. Apparently gajillions of people like to look up things on here or just find their way here via internet searches. Our site is read by many more people than just those who post. The most striking stats of all are on the "Just for those totally devoted to Chopin" thread -- the ratio there is about 1000:1!

One of the main benefits of the feature for me has been finding cool old threads. It's the main way I've found them -- seeing that someone online had somehow found it. Like, when I was working on a Scriabin sonata, I happened to see that someone was reading a very old discussion of the piece and I then clicked on it. Sure, I could probably have found it myself by a search, but I'm just not very interested in doing that (too much like "research" and I'm not here for work) plus, a lot of those interesting old threads have been on topics that I never would have thought of looking for myself.

The majority of the time I read PW I'm not logged in, so I fall in the guest category. I lurked for almost a year before I registered. So between dedicated lurkers and registered users not being logged in, it's not surprising (to me) that the number of guests is high. Another sign of it is how many more "views" there are than replies on almost every thread -- usually about 10:1. 10:1 (10%) seems high to me. More like 2.5-5%, based on eyeball calculations (and a few with calculator in hand :)). The 2.5-5% reply rate seems pretty typical of several other forums I frequent. Maybe it says something about the prevalence of certain personality types amongst the public, who knows?

I haven't been paying close enough attention. The ratio of views to posts is even more extreme than I thought. Where I got the other figure (I guess): From another site I've participated in (on baseball). The usual ratio there is 'only' about 10:1, and I just forgot that it's not the same on here. I may have never quite noticed that it was so much higher here in general. (I did notice the very extreme ratio on the Chopin thread.)

So what's a "spider" on the "Who's Online" scoreboard?

So what's a "spider" on the "Who's Online" scoreboard? It is a "web crawler".... Google and other search engines use spiders to index information. Spider - web - world wide web.... Geeky humour ? I never knew either. And really I still don't.

OK.... Why would that be a thing that is included (fairly routinely, I gather) in site info, such as in something like "Who's Online"? In other words: who cares, why is it of interest, what do we gain from knowing it? That was the main thing I didn't get after the first description (because it made me think I wasn't understanding what it was).

I've always found the spider count interesting. When I google on a topic being discussed here, google's spiders have almost always been here already to index the discussion. No doubt there are also spiders seeking email addresses to spam.

No doubt there are also spiders seeking email addresses to spam. If you look at the list of spiders (also found in the who's online section) they are all search engine spiders. They are primarily indexing the threads, but if you have an email address plainly listed in a thread it could well get indexed. If it's only in your profile, they won't get it. Last time I checked, Google had over 2,600,000 pages indexed for Piano World overall.

Huh -- so, the specific spiders show up? Where? (I looked, and didn't find -- including on "Who's Online.") edit: Aha -- at the bottom of the Who's Online page. I never looked down that far.

Yes, at the bottom of the Who's Online List, it lists the spiders, and what they were "reading"

I wonder if it is not a bit too intrusive though... The list even specifies when people are viewing private messages, although it doesn't say from whom... Still... ?? I really don't see anything intrusive about it. If it showed to whom you were writing or receiving from .. that would be different. So what if someone is writing or reading a private message? As long as you can't see the contents, I can't see that it matters at all. It is a public forum - what you do is public. What you read or write may be private.
