Xmas is coming up and haven't bought a piano book in a long time. I'm gonna ask for a piano book but don't know which one. I already have Beethoven Bagatelles, Chopin Preludes and Waltzes, Clementi Sonatinas. I love classical and romantic periods. Don't mention sonatas, concertos, too hard. I'm really looking for "collections" like the above.
Was thinking of maybe chopin mazurkas or nocturnes what do you think.
Any suggestions please feel free to let me know! smile happy xmas!

Chopin Mazurkas are nice, but you might want to try something different like Albeniz's Suite Espagnole. Very accessible.

How can you not fall in love with this:

Or maybe the Grieg Nocturnes for a less played out flavor than the Chopin

There is, I believe, only one Nocturne for piano by Grieg, from the Lyric Pieces, Op 54, No 4.

You should look into Scriabin. There is a "complete preludes and etudes" by dover that's fairly cheap, and he is a great composer of the late-romantic period. I open that book up so much its become worn out. As for examples of his work:

etude op 8 no 12

prelude op 11 no 9

I LOVE that Christmas fake book available on Amazon. Use it on the job every year - my fave Christmas song is a toss up between Rockin Around the Christmas Tree and/or Jingle Bell Rock - loved 'em the first time I ever heard them and love them to this day...rock on, y'all...and a happy holiday season to everyone!

Dover has a reasonably-priced edition of the Mozart Sonatas/Fantasies. Nice collection. Also the Dover Schumann books 1 and 3 are great. In fact, for the money, I think almost all of the Dover music collections for piano can be recommended, although most of the Liszt is very difficult. The Debussy, Faure, Grieg Misc., and several Bach collections are great, too.

I should think that if one were requesting a book of piano music as a gift, one might have the temerity to ask for something a little bit better than Dover.

This year probably Henle's Beethoven Sonatas Book 2. The most fun - Boogie Woogie piano - I think it is Hal Leonard and it was edited by someone at Berklee. Fun and easy and great for improv.

Most good music shops carry a booklet of Xmas Carols ... moons ago I got my seasonal copy of the best known Carols .

I’ve just turned up my copy of Good King Wenceslas (my favourite) for an airing at the piano.

“Good King Wenceslas look out on the Feast of Stephen
When the snow lay round about, deep and crisp and even,
Brightly shone the moon that night. Though the frost was cruel,
When a poor man came in sight, gath’ring winter fuel.

Hither, page, and stand by me. If thou know it telling:
yonder peasant, who is he? Where and what his dwelling?
Sire, he lives a good league hence, underneath the mountain,
right against the forest fence by Saint Agnes fountain.

Bring me flesh, and bring me wine. Bring me pine logs hither.
Thou and I will see him dine when we bear the thither.
Page and monarch, forth they went, forth they went together
through the rude wind's wild lament and the bitter weather.

Sire, the night is darker now, and the wind blows stronger.
Fails my heart, I know not how. I can go no longer.
Mark my footsteps my good page, tread thou in them boldly:
Thou shalt find the winter's rage freeze thy blood less coldly.

In his master's step he trod, where the snow lay dented.
Heat was in the very sod which the saint had printed.
Therefore, Christian men, be sure, wealth or rank possessing,
ye who now will bless the poor shall yourselves find blessin
g.”

Good King Wenceslas says it all ... a Merry Christmas.
