Sotheby's has sold one of the two pianos used in the classic movie "Casablanca" for $602,500. It's the one that was used in the Paris flashback. The main one from Rick's Cafe is on loan to the Warner Bros. museum.

The piano has only 58 keys (C2 - A6), and the maker is listed as "Richardson's Inc Los Angeles". Has anyone heard of that as a make? My guess is that Richardson's was probably a retailer, and this is either a stencil piano, or the original maker's name has long ago been painted over. It kinda looks like a Miller Brothers, but the serial number is 253333, and I've seen a newer Miller Brothers with the number 109164, and 68 keys.

Nope, as-is, where-is, in Manhattan. Without the provenance, this piano would be worth a negative number of dollars, the cost of hauling it to the dump.

It is a Tom Thumb piano, which bore a number of manufacturer's names, but were probably all built by the same manufacturer, possibly Kohler & Campbell.

They have some value even today.

Years ago I was told it was a short keyboard Melody Grand made by Winter.
Later in the 70's when players in modern cases came on the scene,Winter made it into a short keyboard player. And renamed it Pianola.

No, the short keyboard Winters had more keys, 68 or 73 as I recall, and had spinet actions. Tom Thumbs had full upright actions.

I counted octaves on the picture in the Sotheby's cataloge, it's definitely 58 keys. IIRC, the shots of the action show it to be a compact upright, not a drop spinet design.
