Well, on a digital such as I have, you can introduce decent sounding other instruments and orchestral/brass ensembles to a piano base. Or a guitar base, etc. And add percussion if you want, which is all very nice.

But to actually play the same song on piano only? One has to fill in the gaps (presumably the singer would need gaps in which to draw breath) with something suitable and non repetitive (non boring lol)

It`s not that easy . . . ! I`ve been trying for ages on a simple song. Oh dear! Ohdear ohdear ohdear ohsh**. . time for a non boring cup o` coffee. And a dark choc ginger biscuit; maybe two . . .then back to the drawing board

Just try to play as much as you can of the extra instruments/parts.
Look at this guy doing a solo of "I Robot" (Alan Parsons):

The original song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=td56XAHxLpw

The piano solo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CTIx85xJSnI

Awesome stuff!

Greg.

Too long Greg; 40 odd years, but learnt a bit as a kid as you do..I`m set in me ways I`m afraid. But the recording facility is a great critic!
