Well, all owners of pre-1900 Chickerings. While there are a couple others keeping registries of older Chickering pianos, I too have one. At some point in the near future I will be visiting the Smithsonian and converting their Chickering registry to a spreadsheet and I'll be updating that with size, scale, pictures, and current status as available.

In that regard, I am welcoming (read: desperately begging) everyone on this site to contribute with as much information as they are willing. And for the technicians and rebuilders out there, any such information on pianos you work on or have worked on would be most helpful.

I am optimistic that within the next year we can have a functioning website database will all of the pre-1900 Chickerings on it (except I believe the Smithsonian is missing one volume of registries) and current status and other helpful info.

Your concerted help is greatly appreciated!

Greg

Hi Greg,

If I am not mistaken, there is a photocopy of Bk II, the one I believe is missing. I may not be remembering it correctly.

I think I may have seen that photocopy there. How will the information be made available after you put it into a spreadsheet?

The folks there at the Smithsonian have expressed their interest in being the providers of information compiled as you mention. Will we go through them for information?

I plan to make it available as a website. The registry (at least the pages I've seen of it) at the Smithsonian don't provide dimensions and scale designations of the pianos, so to me there is still great value to be had in having that information added by users or otherwise. So even if Smithsonian ever digtizes their volumes of the registries, I see real purpose in another database with the additional info.

Thanks
Greg

Greg,

It is my understanding that they would want to be the ones credited.

May I recommending asking them?

I have personally examined the original log books in the Smithsonian's Archives. I do believe there are scale designations. A series of books, 500 pages each, one piano per page, detail quite a bit about each piano.

You are correct though, there is a lot of information that could be gathered.
