As an aspiring jazz pianist, they are very important and i study them every day ... they are the basis for improv

I can't speak to the cloasical world, but I would suspect they are much less important

Thanks Larry, for your comments. I am a beginner piano player but in another life I was a beginner sax player, a little beginner jazz. I love learning in a classical direction, but I miss a little jazz on the side. Your comment about scales and arpeggios makes absolutely perfect sense, too. And I will be doing both more than I have been.

I recommend the following book: Intermediate Jazz Improvisation by George Bouchard. I have met George and the book is top notch. A study in pentatonics and chord tones

Here is a link for you: http://www.jazzbooks.com/mm5/merchant.mv...;Category_Code=

Amazon also carries: http://www.amazon.com/Intermediate-Jazz-...george+bouchard

I am not related to George in any fashion, just an aspiring Jazz student who went to Aebersold and found this book

I hope it helps you
