As an aspiring jazz pianist, they are very important and i study them every day ... they are the basis for improv

I can't speak to the cloasical world, but I would suspect they are much less important

i think scales arpegios technique very important classical too. build skill do every day a little bit. but lately my thumbs a little sore!! i think from turning under on scales and arpeg's plus sitting at computer. ughh

Thanks Larry, for your comments. I am a beginner piano player but in another life I was a beginner sax player, a little beginner jazz. I love learning in a classical direction, but I miss a little jazz on the side. Your comment about scales and arpeggios makes absolutely perfect sense, too. And I will be doing both more than I have been.

I recommend the following book: Intermediate Jazz Improvisation by George Bouchard. I have met George and the book is top notch. A study in pentatonics and chord tones
