The list is endless. "Bridge Over . . " (Paul Simon) is superb. But this takes some beating; Love the style of playing.

The matched motion control between the green screen and the BG plates is the impressive thing about that video.

As for "piano-based", I was thinking "As Time Goes By" -- strongly associated with solo piano and vocal from the movie....

I have to agree with 'As Time Goes By'. So many people have seen the movie, and the piano is such a strong part of the song, though that seems strange to say.

Amoreena. Actually almost everything on *Tumbleweed Connection* or *Madman Across the Water*. Before Elton went "glam" he did some hard-driving boogie rock.

I was a teen in the 80s listening to "classic rock" FM stations and of course heard all the "usual" classic rock Elton songs. It wasn't until something like 2004 that I heard "Amoreena" on Sirius XM one day and about wrecked my car. Dafuq was this awesome track? Why had I never heard it?

After hearing that song I bought Tumbleweed Connection and just raged because the whole album was so great. Classic Rock radio wronged me - I had heard "Daniel" a million times but never any of this awesome stuff? And then I heard 11/17/70 and Madman Across the Water and found out just how much ass Elton kicked before he want Beyond The Yellow Brick Road. I still don't understand why those songs don't get more airplay.

And then I saw *Dog Day Afternoon*. "Amoreena" is (famously, apparently) the title track.

Yes his general image (these days) just doesn't reflect the musicianship and songwriting talent of the man - which is unsurpassed. And no need to draw a line at Goodbye Yellow Brick Road - although slightly more careful choices are needed to really find the good stuff after 1976 - but there is a little glint of genius in every album if you look for it.

The piano playing in Amoreena is out of this world and at times isn't really showcased as such - you really have to listen hard to hear how much he is doing in that track. And I agree that Tumbleweed Connection is great. As good as any album ever recorded in my opinion - and never given enough credit by the rock "intelligentsia". I think he damaged his own credibility by his use of crazy glasses and outrageous clothes. And The Lion King hasn't really helped his cause either!

It's nice to hear from someone else who has discovered the "real" Elton! I think we are more or less the same age too and my experience was much the same as yours. And now I'm going to pop off and listen to Ballad of a Well known Gun...

Cheers,

Steve

I love Ave Maria, but almost think the harp may be better suited for the piece than piano (is this blasphemous?)

I *have* to pick two:

1. Piano + singing (my man!):

2. Piano only (and I love her arrangement)

Hugo Wolf's Ich hab' in Penna einen Liebsten wohnen is a one-minute firecracker of a song - just make sure the pianist doesn't fluff the ending.... wink http://youtu.be/ThRnctSTx-o.

And a truly menacing song is Der Feuerreiter http://youtu.be/vMfjEH4AMTY

I think I'll go with Nina Simone "Love Me or Leave Me"... always LOVE the piano solo in the middle... She plays it differently in every performance, but this one is my fav.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GEQpipS_qfc

AND I love Billy Joel with "Angry Young Man"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4wGtmQTbDyE

thanks,
