Hi all,

I'm the proud owner of a Kawai CA-65 which I bought for my 9 year old daughter. We both want to learn to play the piano.
Lately I noticed a problem with the sound. Since I'm a piano-rookie, I'll try to explain it as good as I can.
You can hear it best if you first turn off the "reverb"
If you play any key short the tone normally quickly fades out since the pedal is not used. This happens on all the keys... except from G6 (2 octaves above middle G) and higher! There the tone keeps playing almost as if the pedal was pressed.
It is something very noticable. I suppose it could get in the way as soon as we learn to play that part of the piano. Which probably is not going to happen very soon ... ;-)
Does anybody else have this on his or her CA-65? Or is this perfectly normal behaviour?

Yup we need a FAQ on this. This is how an acoustic piano behaves, so your Kawai is copying that behaviour. The idea goes that those short strings don't need a damper because the tone dies so quickly anyway. it comes up often on here.

No dampers on those strings on an acoustic, so ..uhm..yeh ...normal behavior indeed...,

In general: let's all try to avoid words like problem, fault , issue, flaw in a thread headline as long as we are not sure if there really is a problem, or just a misconception of a feature and such. People who google the web may get the wrong impression when too many hits with problems show up with a brand and type of piano and forget/ fail to read on what it's really all about...

I think it's always a good idea if people try to have a look and a feel on a real piano whenever they find something odd on their new DP - it's often just that the DP is 'trying' to emulate the real thing grin, no matter how unnecessary that is on an electronic instrument.

I've been asked the same three questions many times, when I've played in DP showrooms (sometimes after the punter has asked the salesperson but didn't get a satisfactory answer): the first is the one the OP asked; the second one (even more common) is why there's a 'notch' on the key travel, as if something is sticking (this doesn't apply to all non-AG/NU1 Yamaha DPs, but it's something people notice immediately when they play an AG or NU1 immediately after a Clavinova, and then think there's something wrong). The last one is probably the least frequently noticed, except by children, with their more sensitive fingers wink : why are the bottom keys heavier than the top ones.........

Pierken, as others have stated, this is actually the correct, intended behaviour, as explained in the 'Troubleshooting' section of the owner's manual (p.124):

IMHO rtfm is a very rude comment and should not be part of this forum. Happy that we agree on that. People should never be taken aback to ask whatever question. As long as not everything is immediately reported as a 'problem / fault ' , if its not sure yet that's is the case. Google search is a merciless beast for product revieuws ...

It was never my intention at all to put Kawai in a bad light.
On the contrary, I couldn't be happier with my purchase!
I changed the subject of this thread and hope that satisfies the other Kawai fans. laugh
