I have been pestered enough now for some pictures and therefore, here you are, beginning with a simply marvellous Sauter Vivace at Manfred Jelemensky's store in Fügen in the beautiful Zillertal:

Photos at last! I have never seen a Sauter before. This one has an art deco look about it. Not sure that I would descibe it as especially elegant, especially the end stop shapes of the case beside the keyboard. Or the pedal bracing strut. The inlays in the upper rim are interesting.

See, this changes everything. It's nice to see the kind of shop the piano is in too. Hmm, silver frame - see I didn't catch that in your post (if you said it).

That particular example of a Sauter is from the Peter Maly design line -- there other instruments look "normal". I so far only have seen the catalogue pictures, but those give a better impression. Not so sure about the looks of it - I don't think I'd put something like that in my sitting room.

But yes - thanks for the pictures (I always forget to take the camera along ...)

Bags not be the one who has to take the legs and 'lyre' off that to ship it.

Very funky! I'm with mjs; that piano falls into the category of "I'd rather look at it in somebody else's living room than my own."

I have to defend it, standing in front of it it looks much better, although it is something you've got to get "accustomed" to... and I'm not sure I'd accustom myself to it standing in my living room (yep, I'm a boring traditionalist...)

I'm sure it sounds quite lovely. But, if it were a bit smaller and a I saw it moving across my livingroom floor, my first inclination would be to reach for the can of Raid.

That looks REALLY nice! I love the end caps - that grabbed my attention (and the "aluminum" looking frame.)


The only part that seemed a bit over-the-top to me was the inlay on the rim. It was adding just one more brush stroke to the Mona Lisa.

What I like about this piano is the fact that it is a little different.

Pianos are Sooo traditional and the looks are sooo expected that it is refreshing to me to see a decidedly unique approach to the piano cabinet. Among contemporary design attempts when it comes to the piano, this one is among the best I have seen.

There have been some really bad ones....like these:

My 2 cents,

Eeeeeeekkkkk, those make the Sauter look beautiful.

However, I'm not sure how practical the "lyre" / pedal struts are as they look susceptible to abuse and breakage. The end caps would make it next to impossible to watch another pianist play.

I'm with you two, apple and Monster- I like it. As does my husband, who saw it over my shoulder as he walked by and said- "ooh, nice!" and stopped to get a better look.

"Beautiful," "graceful," "nice?" Have any of you visited an optician recently? The casework has been thoroughly beaten with a Very Large Ugly Stick, and the silver blocks on the rim are the kind of thing a 6 year old would do. It belongs quite firmly with other excrescences posted by Rich G above!

Interesting diversity of opinion - and now a question. If you found the most beautiful sounding piano in the whole world at an affordable price but it looked ugly would you buy it?
