First, thanks to Steve Cohen for mentioning this! I can't believe I'd never heard of this gem.
http://www.nethercuttcollection.org/Collection.aspx

We spent half a day there, a great half day. The car collection is phenomenal. Absolutely. But the real highlight were the pianos and orchestrions.

On the second level was a small reproducing Knabe baby grand. A wonderfully sounding piano. On it, George Gershwin performed Rhapsody in Blue via an Ampico roll. Gershwin is a great pianist.

On the same level was a Edison cylinder player. They have 8000 cylinders on hand.

The next level was the real treat. All sorts of orchestrions, all in very good playing condition. There were too many to demonstrate them all.

There was a Boesendorfer Imperial with a reproducing mechanism, a Mason and Hamlin baby grand player as well as what I think must be a pianoforte from Vienna. I should have taken notes.

The centerpiece was the "Mighty" WurliTzer pipe organ. The entire building vibrated when he played the lowest note.

The master technician was part of the tour. As you can imagine, he enjoys his job very much. It was a large group, and I did not get a chance to bend his ear.

The collection is more than worth the price of admission. Which is an astronomical $0.00.

That's not a typo, it's free.

This is one of the many "hidden gems" in Los Angeles. I was introduced to it over 20 years ago, and it is time to go again. (Did you know that Los Angeles has more museums per capita than any other city in the world?)
