#2026384 - 02/03/13 03:37 PM Can anyone suggest any pieces for my level?

Hi,

I have recently started playing again after having stopped exam studying when I was a young boy.

I want to increase my repertoire mostly so I would like to play as many pieces as possible. The problem I encounter is that I sometimes try to learn a piece, but it is too difficult, or it would take me too much time to learn it. Thus, I would get frustrated and give it up in the process, so I would end up with many incomplete pieces.

The last 2 pieces I enjoyed practicing and learning in their entirety were the following:

Comptine d'une autre été - L'apres midi - Yann Tiersen
River Flows in You - Yiruma

Does anyone know of a few contemporary or classical songs of about the same level, which I can learn, and which would be neither too easy nor too difficult?

Thanks in advance,
Tim

I know the difficulty level of the second piece but am unfamiliar with the first. At the level of the first one there are thousands of potentially appropriate pieces that could be suggested. Perhaps if you suggest a composer or two you might be interested in(and maybe some classical pieces you've played)it would help us give you suggestions. If you're more interested in non classical pieces I would try the Non Classical forum although you'll probably get some suggestions here also.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. I am mostly interested in well known songs, like from film sound tracks, for example, or other popular pop songs. I also like composers like Ludovico Einaudi from the new age era, or mostly Mozart and Beethoven (and the other famous composers). I do have some books from them (like Mozart Gold Collection), but I do not know which pieces would suit my level, and any pointers would be greatly appreciated! I have played some classical pieces like Fur Elise, songs by Clementi (exercises) and others but I have since forgotten them! I'm afraid I do not have much of a repertoire right now! frown

By the way, this is the song I mentioned by Yann Tiersen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ZJDNSp1QJA

Thanks again,
Tim

Beethoven: Eccosaisen, Sonatas Op. 49 Nos. 1 and 2, Bagatelles Op. 33(some are probably OK, others might be too hard), 6 Variations on 'Nel cor piu non mi sento'

Mozart: Sonata K.545 in C, Rondo in D major

Chopin: Preludes(in b minor, e minor, C minor, A major, D flat major), Waltzes(in b minor, a minor (Op. 34 No.2)), Mazurkas (in F major Op.7 and G minor Op. 17)

Bach: Little Preludes and Fugues, Two-Part Inventions

These are really guesses so if you think they're too easy let us know and we can adjust accordingly. You can listen to all of them on YouTube and get the scores for free at IMSLP to try and help you decide. Also if you tell us the contents of the books you already have we could suggest which pieces might work.

Oh my god, the Yann Tiersen piece was beautiful! I have heard it somewhere before, but couldn't ever put my finger on the name! I hardly ever like contemporary piano music, so thanks for re-introducing me to that one smile

I have a few suggestions though, I have played them all so I can vouch for their 'graspability' (I don't think that's a word haha)

Truman sleeps - From the the Truman Show (written by Philip Glass I think)
Kesson Daslef - Aphex Twin (It is only one page long)
Victor's Piano Solo - From the Corpse Bride/Danny Elfman (one of only three other modern pieces I find genuinely beautiful)

All in a minor key, as that's what I seem to gravitate towards :L

Or you could check out Burgmuller's Opus 100, that is that sort of level. The tarantella, arabesque, and l'orage are all great!

Hope you can enjoy these pieces smile
