What does everyone use for their computer/office chair, and, does it offer good back support?

Just bought this:

It was inexpensive although there is no way to adjust the tilt of the back rest (as it's in a fixed position too far back) and the seat itself sinks way down almost as it it didn't have any padding.

Looks like I wasted some money on this one, as it doesn't support the back properly, and, allows slouching. My solid (all plastic) lawn chair gives me more support by far!

Any ideas for something better?

I use the following (in black without arm rests) ... (Actually that's the chair I use for the piano, for the desk I use a €80 chair from Ikea that works just fine.)

Is there a reason you don't want a conventional piano bench?

I like having back support ... and wheels.

Since I spend so many hours at the piano I want to sit not only very comfortably but in a good chair. The mesh back allows some breathing and while I would have liked a mesh seat, that would have cost even more (from another brand).

I also like being able to lean back in the chair and have support pressing against me. I'm not on stage, I'm working in my living room.

LOL - Actually, Dr. Evil's chair looks quite comfortable and ergonomic. I love that he has an arcade-style flight joystick for the controls! Now if they can just work out the bugs

I would say not to get an executive chair unless you are pipe smoking CEO. Get an office chair and remove the armrests. Go to the local ofce supply store and sit on the chairs. To save money try Craigslist and garage sales.

The arms drop to about 2" above the seat and the base is wide rendering them completely out of the way.



If you slouch or balance a lot of weight in the chair back it automatically relines to a degree. This recline kicks in when force is applied to the upper area of the chair back. Yet if you sit straight it supplies strong lumbar support. The back always conforms to your spine. The seat area is very comfortable........never get tired of sitting in it for hours.

Seriously....you should try out chairs yourself. That's how you find one you like.
I've even found some wood chairs more comfortable than padded chairs.

On the piano bench. I've got both. I'll even use the piano bench for an ottoman at times.

I use the Aeron chair, possibly the best Computer/office chair on the market.

You can buy them considerably off list if you shop around, but trust me, if you're a heavy computer user, you don't want to skimp on a decent chair.

Thanks for all that have given their ideas so far, although the best offerings are well above my price range for buying, so I continue looking for something relatively inexpensive (at amazon.com) yet is reasonably supportive. The current chair I just bought (in the link of the original post) is really pretty bad!

Feels like there is no padding for the rear portion of the seat as you sink right into a hard board which is the bottom of the seat. I have put an additional cushion on top of the seat but you still get squished into the center of it.

It is a very odd seat with a fixed backward tilt and a lumpy area for the lower back which does nothing to promote proper posture.

I've never had any luck with low-priced office chairs. They're cheaply made and they don't last.

The stuff is just cheap junk until you get into the $600+ range. Those are built to last for decades.

Yes, Mac, you're right in regards to the pricing of these chairs.

However, I am going to give it a go with another task chair (from Walmart for $150) that has some additional adjusting features that the first one didn't, as I am pretty sure it will be a better for basic support and posture.

Even if doesn't last forever (which it will not) it should be comfortable enough to do the job and I can always buy another one when it wears out.

And, thanks to everyone for the current suggestions and comments.

Off topic, but while you're there, perhaps you can also buy a $5 USB memory stick on which to record your performances,
