It's a piano concerto, I'm pretty sure a slow movement. The theme that's in my head is G-C-D-E flat-C (or a transposition; I don't have perfect pitch). The rhythm is the G as eighth note pick-up, then dotted eighth on the C, the D-E flat are 32nds, and the last C is a long note (then it all repeats). I also remember a timpani playing under that theme, and a modulation to a nice major theme stated in the strings, with tinkly commentary in the piano.

Any help? Sorry for any approximations; I'm doing this purely by memory...

Doesn't ring any bell. The shape of the melody is exactly the first few notes of the Brahms F minor Quintet, but the note values are different, there's no timpani, and it's not a slow mvt, so I guess that's not it. ha

I'll be interested to see what it is. As you describe it, it has beautiful haunting possibilities. I hear it as a C minor harmony the first time, then A-flat, then any number of possibilities for the third chord.
