So I've had this Roland DP-990 for a while, and I've been trying to record some things with it. However, when I try to save them to an external drive, it will invariably save as a midi-file, which does not make for good listening. Is there a way to get it to save as any other format or am I forced to get converter software?

Unfortunately, the DP-990 can only save as MIDI. The successor versions of this piano can save as audio, though.

I also have a DP-990, and often times I will use the on-board recording to save as MIDI until I get a performance I want to keep, at which point I play the track on the DP and use the audio output to record it on my computer.

By the way - most cables I tried initially had very poor quality when recording from the audio outputs. I eventually found a good quality cable and I can look that up for you if you're interested. Another option is just to use the headphone jack, but take care in adjusting the gain levels, since this is a powered output.
