I had to look up Edward Gorey. I didn't know his name, even though I've seen his cartoons. To be fair, his output probably translates into a Google Doodle better that Chopin's would.

I do love these cartoons. I follow them on Facebook. Some are stumpers, but they are usually quite funny. The guys did one about the Etude in Thirds a month or so ago that was perfect for anybody who ever tried to play that piece.

I thought so too, but according to Wiki:

The parish baptismal record, discovered in 1892, gives his birthday as 22 February 1810, but a date one week later, 1 March, was stated by the composer and his family as his birthday; according to Chopin in a letter of 16 January 1833 to the chairman of the Polish Literary Society in Paris, he was "born 1 March 1810 at the village of Żelazowa Wola in the Province of Mazowsze."

Yes it is. February 22 is the date listed as his birthday on his baptismal certificate. He and his family said it was March 1.

I say celebrate it twice. (He's worth it.)

I agree. Let's celebrate it twice! I usually celebrate it in March because I am a March kid too, but really, he deserves to be celebrated twice.
So... Happy Birthday to Fred the poet of the piano and my dearest friend!

I've forgotten what Google commemorated on March 1, 2010 (Chopin's 100th) but it wasn't Chopin. I suspect the Google Gurus work at going off the beaten path with their commemorations.

Happy Birthday, Edward. (I love Gorey's stuff too.)

Chopin was a twentieth-century composer? Color me surprised. Was he friends with Gershwin? wink
