Hello all,

Just wondering if anyone has any comments about a Kawai RX2 built in 1996 (but allegedly first sold in 2001). I'm putting in an offer but I just want to be sure we're doing the right thing here. Anybody have any experience with these they'd like to share? The technician I've been talking to says he's seen a few Kawai's with loose tuning pins and he wanted me to also consider a new Palatino for a similar price, but I'm not too sure about this.

Also, when I raise the damper pedal, all the strings said, "schwiiiing". I assume this can be fixed, and I will have the piano checked out, but can anyone reassure me here?

Thanks all!

In my years in business I've seen a few [insert brand name here] with a few loose pins. Every brand occasionally has a loose pin or two, and he doesn't even say that the particular piano you are considering has a problem. I would seriously discount what this technician has said.

I think he wants you to buy the Palatino. While I have no problem with Palatino, it is not near the same class as the RX-2, even a 15 year old one, if in decent condition.

The damper problem is also common and usually easily addressed.

I agree with Steve, though my viewpoint is as a pianist.

Though the Palatino is a nice instrument, and worth playing and checking out, it is not the equal of a Kawai RX2.

It's much easier to bash a Steinway than it is to play one.

Thanks for the replies. I'm glad to know the damper sound isn't a big deal.

My thinking about the Palatino is the same - I think he just wanted me to know what was out there for the same price before I made a commitment. He admitted the "fit and finish" on the Kawai would be better. I guess it's always good to explore all the options, though.

When bass dampers do not lift all at once that sound is audible.
