I don't want this to sound like a promotion so I will not mention any websites or names in this post. I started taking private lessons from a site that offers instruction via your webcam. I started lessons in November, and my playing has drastically improved. I am not an adult beginner, as I took private lessons for 6 years 30 years ago, so I alreday knew things like reading music, all my major and minor scales, chords and inversions, etc. But I can honestly say this is the most progress I have ever made. The nice thing with the site is there are many teachers, and you can interview them to see if they meet what you are looking for, and the first lesson is free, so you can test drive it and see if the teacher is a good fit, and if you think the technology works for you. One thing I found extremely helping was, installing recording software on my pc, so I can save and review my lesson as needed. I am curious if others are taking online lessons and what their experiences are.

I had a few Skype lessons last summer/autumn, but the teacher had to back out because of technical issues on his side and refunded half the money (I had taken about half of the lessons I paid for.)

Still I enjoyed it a lot. We decided to go through Let It Be, but just got to review the intro. He would play some part, then tell me to repeat what he played and comment on how I did. It's quite possible that I'll take online lessons again sometime.

However in my opinion, both sides need to have a good web camera and internet connection. HD is almost a necessity, plus enough speed to deliver it.

Thanks. One thing that is very useful for me, and I am not sure all teachers will do this, but my teacher sends me an e-mail immediately following the lesson. He has his laptop open during the lesson and types in ideas and notes, and then sends a very detailed lesson plan of what I need to work on for the week, and he also tells me to write back to him with any questions. Because the infrastructure and tools are owned and supported by the website the quality of audio/video has been pretty good. There were a couple of occassions when we had some intermittent issues, and we were forced to switch over to Skype during the lesson, but the site gave me 2 free lessons due to the inconvenience.
