It was a warm day today and I guess one cockroach decided to take refuge in the air-conditioned piano room...inside the piano!

Had to take the action out because I didn't want a squashed cockroach with my action and end up with a dead bug inside.

funny though, we hardly get these critters in our house, first time i've seen one in a long time!!

Now I think about it, it is so easy for flies and other bugs to get in a grand piano. anyone found theirs to have a bunch of dead bugs when the action is pulled out?

Open up a few older pianos and you will find all kinds of things from dead bugs and mouse damage, to old coins and sometimes jewelry.

OK, jewelry - not too often, but it has happened.

And I seem to remember another thread about weird and gross stuff found by piano tuners inside customers pianos. If I recall, that was also an entertaining thread, but I could find that one.

I once had an ear plug without my knowing fall into the action of a seven foot Steinway. This was one of those squeezable\compressible yellow ear plugs and it took me a while before I realized what was going on.

The action would compress the ear plug and then the note would more or less respond well for a short while until it expanded again and cause problems.

I popped the action out and smiled.

Oh, yuck foo! Glad ya' got the little critter outta there. Creeps me out just thinking about it! *shudder*

Just remember, for every cockroach you've seen, there are at least 100 others you haven't seen. I wouldn't consider this the end of the matter if you are concerned about it. You might need to get an exterminator in to check your place out.

I found a heavy lump of something in an old 1800's era square grand which had a sticker put on it that said "NOT GOLD" written on it. So we took it over to the buffing wheel, buffed that area out and sure enough it had a cast mark under that which turned out to be about 14 oz

So the moral is, if you don't have a safe, get some stickers and mark your gold " NOT GOLD" to deter would be thieves, then forget about it and leave your piano packed with " NOT GOLD" in some warehouse for 40 years.

No roaches here, this is TN we have wolf spiders in the warm months.

Well, Ando is dead right. I applaud your great effort--- very worthwhile, in my opinion--- to dispossess the intruding roach from your piano and your home, AND all it's fellow roachy friends. You can throw in mice, while we're on the subject, and contemplate the worthlessness of houseflies buzzing around your music room.

Although an exterminator can be very worthwhile, remember that the first rule of Integrated Pest Management is: eliminate habitat. I don't mean get rid of your piano, just make it clear to pest species that the welcome mat is not out. And fix the window screens.

Your piano looked clean-as-brand-new inside, Xerox61. It is a fine first step on a hard-line policy of, "You can run but you can't hide."

It was a discerning cockroach to choose a beautiful Shigeru Kawai 7?? as its lodging place.

You`ll find that cockroaches, spiders etc are attractive little critters to the opposite sex. It`ll have a mate there . . . or two! They won`t stay if you put some obnoxious smelly stuff in there . .
