Hi,
I am looking at purchasing a 1996 Kawai HA20 in a private sale, I am purchasing the Piano for my daughters who are 3 years into lessons using a digital piano(Yamaha Piaggero). I have seen the HA20 described as a slimline piano it's depth is 54cm, does the depth of a piano make a big difference, for example a Kawai K3 is 59cm, do you get a bigger sound from a deeper Piano. The HA20 sounds fine and it fits budget but as its a private sale its hard for me to compare with other pianos as you would in a shop.

Hi, and welcome to Piano World!

I'm certainly no expert, but, as a general rule, the taller the upright, or longer the grand, the richer the tone... usually.

That doesn't mean that smaller pianos don't have a quality sound. And, in some cases, a smaller, higher quality piano, may have a much better tone than a bigger lesser quality piano.

Good luck!

Rick

Depth is normally not a major consideration in sound production; however, the pianos height of 48" is and, all other things being equal, will probably be just fine for your daughters. Good luck!

The only case I can see where depth might matter would be a spinet with a "drop" action (bottom of the action behind and below the ends of the keys). In these, the keys may sometimes be shorter meaning shorter levers - less mechanical advantage. Spinets with full length keys might require a deeper cabinet. You'd have to compare the key length to those in a console or studio to be sure, though. If you're not looking at a spinet, I really don't see depth as an issue.
