My trio is going to do this Brubeck piece at an upcoming concert.

I saw it on the Academy Awards (it's in Silver Linings Playbook), and decided I had to do it.

There will be about 10-20 people sitting and listening at this small venue.

The clapping is an important part of the tune, and it should sound crisp and accurate.

Do you think I should have everyone clap, or just have a few people who I know can do it well come up and do the clapping.

I have a feeling, that everyone will clap no matter what I plan.

I tried clapping along and it pretty heavily distracted from listening and enjoying the piece while having to (I could just be inept at clapping/multitasking). I'd just have a select few that don't mind focusing on it and that have maybe practiced a run-through once or twice do it on or near the stage.

edit: by the way, where are you guys going to be playing? Maybe I'll come if it's not too far.

That's a good point, Bob (distracting to clap).

We'll be playing in Westhaven, CA, near Eureka -- probably a bit far for you. smile

Well, at the gig, the audience was a total failure at clapping. We had a few people come up and do it, but many joined it, but not correctly. To be fair, the bass player got a little off too, but I'll have to work something else out next time.
