Hello everyone, I had a question. I may be going to N.Y.C. in the summertime. I will be staying for a few months. While I am there, I still would like to be able to practice the piano. Has anyone ever heard of maybe a music store or something letting someone use a room everyday for a weekly price? Thanks.

Yes, some music stores are happy to rent their teaching rooms for practice as well. Of course there's no way to know if they'd want a weekly fee or...

Take a walk along (or call first) the dealers on what is called "Piano Row", basically 57th and 58th Streets, between like 6th and Broadway. There you'll find Klavierhaus, Faust Harrison, Allegro, Steinway and others. Also, maybe Manhattan College of Music or even Juilliard . . . have fun!

I a am virtually certain none of the Piano Row stores have facilities for practicing. Steinway Hall may have a practice room or two(I think on the second floor).

You might try a PW search on the facility linked two posts above. I recall some discussion about this place in an earlier thread but I cannot recall what the opinions of the pianos were.

One of our posters here said that he rents a practice room at Steinway Hall when he visits NYC from LA.

There were such places when I lived in Boston, years ago. Nothing like as nice as the ones Marty has linked to, and it has been a long time since then... but they had already been there forever, so, who knows.

The OP thought it was a "strange question," but it is a very real concern when traveling. Larger cities usually have rehearsal/practice space available for hourly lease. With my travels, I've become experienced in ferreting them out. Chicago is a bonanza!

Since I live 35 blocks away, I have been to the Piano Row stores at least 30 times and have never seen any practice rooms. Perhaps, you're referring to Steinway Hall which is on 57th Street while Piano Row 58th Street.

If you're ever in Paris, Pianos Hamm has two locations where they rent practice studios:

35, rue Fondary in the 15th arrondissement (+33 01.44.39.35.30)
and 17, rue Monge in the 5th (+33 01.44.39.35.35).

The shop in the 15th is much larger and sells Shigeru Kawai and Fazioli pianos among others. I was embarrassed to find though that the practice studio was not soundproof, and my playing on the Shigeru in the showroom disturbed someone who'd payed for the studio.

The shop in the 5th is tiny and was very busy the day I spent a couple of hours there playing a small Yamaha Silent Grand (mostly in its non-silent mode, with the charming clerk's blessing). It's worth a visit just to see all the rental uprights coming and going and the aplomb with which the staff manages the traffic.

When I travel, I just google: (city name) piano rehearsal space.

I've had luck finding either music stores, or dealerships that also have music schools attached. I've had to convince a couple of stores that it made sense for them to rent studios to me rather than have them sit empty. Seems like a no brainer.

Waltrip's in Arcadia, CA was a Yamaha and Kawai dealer and well as a Yamaha music school. They rented me a studio every weekend. It worked out well for them. They sold me a piano.

HAHHAHA Backwards again...Since you are wrong about thinking Steinway Hall is part of Piano Row and wrong that any Piano Row stores have practice rooms(or are you still claiming otherwise?), it seems that those adjectives would apply to you.

This thread is not about Piano Row. It is about finding practice space in N.Y.C.

My two sons used to love to watch wrestling on TV; I asked them once if they knew it was all rehearsed and choreographed and basically just a show/entertainment... they responded and said, yea, but dad, it's a good show.

Hope this thread doesn't end up needing a referee...
