It's Fun to Play the Piano ... Please Pass It On!

Apparently (from the Billy Joel Facebook page) this guy was on the Today show this morning.
Pianotehead It depends what you want to do. The transcription I have is tough and I would have to take it as a piece to do it justice; but I think I could. But if you just bang around with the chords it can sound pretty nice in a simple fashion. If you are OK noodling from a fake book or just the guitar tabs.
And i'm impressed so much ever by Billy Joel to offer that young man such a chance. There are so many artists out there with egos that are as big as the universe. Billy Joel remains a down to earth man.
Thanks for sharing! One of my favorite tunes, with some inspiration to boot!
It's a great story no matter what -- and the kid is dam good!! -- but some things are being left out from how it's being passed along.
He's not just a kid from the audience. Even though he's only about 18, he's been a professional pianist and songwriter for several years, including playing in a band with B. Joel's saxophone player since he was 12.
Like I said, great story anyway. But it's a little different than it's being made to seem.
Just looking at that puts me in a New York State of Mind!
LOL, me too!
The student said in the beginning, that he had played a few times with Billy's saxophonist. Could he be more than just a piano hobbyist? One must measure up to a certain standard to get to jam with a professional musician, at least more than once.
Wow! This guy will probably not forget that night, for the rest of his life. NY State of Mind is a song I so much wish to learn, but it's far off because it's at advanced level - which disappoints me.
Hi when I read your post, I wanted to say that this is the first song I am actually learning and when it is broken down into easily digested sizes...bit by bit isn't as differcult as it sounds, sure it isn't anything like this guy, but I am guessihg that you can embelish any song once you know the basic song structure melody etc... I only practice once every two days, and then for only 20 mins but each time I practice the section I have trouble with til it sounds better. I did though always think in the back of my mind is this something I should not be learning yet, as it is only been 6 months but the song really touches me so I needed to be able to play it. I had been playing guitar for 7 years off and on and believe this has helped me greatly with the transition to piano. I would like to hear your feedback please? Thanks Daza.
