As has been made known in another thread, I've started using Pianoteq and I'm very happy with it, but there is a small problem.

When I'm using other software with my piano, in this case Synthesia, Pianoteq cuts off it's connection to the piano.

I'm wondering if only one application can listen to a particular MIDI port at the same time, and consequently, can I only have one software running, that has access to the digital piano?

I've tried starting Pianoteq first, then Synthesia and the other way around. If Synthesia is running and is aware of my DP, that connection is lost as soon as I start Pianoteq.

Is there a solution? I'm using a regular MIDI to USB interface.

Judging from my Linux midi hacking, only one app can connect to the midi port at a time. You'd need a virtual software splitter or something. I'm sure someone around here knows the details for Windows.

Try here:

I believe it's a "MIDI mixer", that (among other things) lets you feed one MIDI source to several programs.

The hardware answer -- turn the MIDI source into two MIDI sources is a little box from MIDI Solutions:

I suspect it would be faster to buy the box, than to learn the software!

Thank you xorbe, it makes perfect sense that a MIDI port can't send the same MIDI event simultaneously to many apps, after all it's a physical port made of real wires and buses. Suppose I'll live with using one at a time, don't think it's a big issue.

I like to use some sheet music software or a practising application to get used to hand movements and chord shifts I'm not familiar with and then I can use Pianoteq, playing from the paper sheets, to polish things up.

Edit: Just saw Cohen's post, after I had sent this comment. Thanks for the links, this might be worth looking into. Would be interesting to get feedback from someone who has dealt with this problem of splitting up a MIDI signal to different receiving applications.
