In the future I hope to get a piano but if space is at a premium, and it may well be, I would have have to look into a DP. I would be on a very tight budget so I would probably be looking used, sub £500. I know its asking a lot but by getting second hand I should get more 'bang for my buck' as it were.
At the moment I have an old 5 octave Yamaha psr225 which has horrid light plasticky keys-great piano tone and touch response but horrible feel.
So an upgrade is needed!
I'm not interested in loads of other sounds, bells and whistles, just piano.

Yamaha P35 or 105, or one of the Casio's such as PX150. You could go lower in price but a 'non-hammer' action with an NP11/31 also not full 88 keys. I would look at the 105 versus a Casio. Or save for better, or go used.

Oh and one with pedals? I've never played a piano properly and would want the full experience as it were.

Rimmers were doing casio CDP100s for £250 a while back. Price seems to go up and down.

Its a no frills basic digital piano.

The PX130 also seems to be floating around £350 these days.

The PX150 is £480.

However! Listen and play them first. The PX series don't sound right to me, therefore I'm sticking with my CDP200 and waiting till the Yamaha P155 gets a replacement.

Well I never would have thought a Casio keyboard could sound so good!! My third keyboard was a Casio, it was horrid,lol

Other low cost models not yet mentioned here are Casio CDP-120 and Korg SP-170.

The Casio cdp100 seems good from YouTube videos I've seen. No nonesense DP.
My work colleague, who has a RnB band, has a Roland RS9, but I think thats quite an old model.

I currently own a Casio CDP100 and can vouch for it as a basic digital piano. Better used with headphones or speakers as the internal ones are not fantastic but will do the job. I chose the CDP100 because I liked the action for the price and it will suffice until I can get an acoustic. Although with your mentioned budget you could get better.

Another vote for you to look for a CDP-100. It is definitely good enough for starting and continuing for a while. The price is rock bottom for a good DP to start with. They aren't going to be very much better till you spend a bunch more.
The cheap Casio toys have horrible sound. The CDP-100 is good.
I got mine from a major online retailer as a refurbished unit. Got a great deal.
Save your money for when you can buy a good acoustic.

I think the best advice is to get the best digital piano that you can afford (provided that you're sure that you want to really play it and not turn it into a coat rack).

In your price range, that's probably going to be the yamaha P105, the Casio PX150, or possibly the new Korg SP280. Any of those would be an excellent bang for your buck choice in my view, and it comes down largely to personal preference.

Im leaning towards the CDP100 to be honest. My budget is very tight and possibly set to get worse in the near future Fingers crossed...
But it will be a while yet, I just wanted some options. I might win the lottery and buy a Steinway yet

I believe the CDP100 has been discontinued, so it may be hard to find. Just so you know, it's replacement is the CDP120 which should be pretty easy to find. The CDP120 has USB connections rather than the older MIDI style connectors and has some other upgrades, like better polyphony (how many notes you can play at the same time) and improved tones.

I found the damper pedal supplied with the CDP100 rubbish and replaced it with the M-Audio SP2 pedal which is great for what it does. If you were to purchase the Casio I'd probably set aside £20-30 to get a cheap 2.1 computer speaker system which should inspire you to play rather than curse the built in speaker quality. Other than these aspects the action is brilliant for the price (I prefer it over the £2,000 Roland I used to have) because it feels slightly heavier. Hope that helps

Yea good deal. But totally got no spare money at the moment with the imminent possibility of things getting a lot worse!

Oh I would love to haggle, but at this point in time I have nothing to haggle with. But at least I now have some DPs to look for now. Casio PX350 looks a good un, and in a few years they'll be even cheaper!
