Hello everyone,

Can anyone direct us all to a resource for determining wire sizes of a given note for a given piano? I need to replace a g#6 string on a Yamaha G3 (6 feet). If there's no online chart, etc., would someone post an educated guess? Thank you all!

Do you have a Mic to measure the old one? Best way to know.

I think there is a stamp on the bridge ... I may be thinking of another brand. Still, I would give it a look.

Yamaha stamps the gauges on the bridge.

IMO, if you need to ask, you don't have any business replacing piano wire. Call a tech. That said, the wire gauge is AS&W 15... I take no responsibility for anything that happens to you or your piano if you attempt this repair.

Just to specify and complicate things a bit: the European gauge 15 is different from the American gauge 15. Proceed with caution once you have determined which wire is used in which Asian piano.

The Yamaha G3 is AS&W gauge. My post has been edited.

They are close enough that it is not worth worrying about.

Especially in a piano that is breaking strings!

It is never a good idea to mix gauges within a unison. And it is always a good idea to have some background understanding of a new endeavor you are getting into.

The job of correctly replacing wire can look easy, but it isn't. If you've never replaced piano wire, I'd suggest having a tech. do it. Watch what he does, THEN decide if you want to try it the next time.

If you're going to do this yourself:

It is VERY IMPORTANT that you wear eye protection. Safety glasses with side panels, or goggles, etc.

I had a client last week that had tried to replace his own wire. Put the string through the hole and then wrapped the wire around the pin 3 times. Yeah, that didn't work.

Just do it so that it looks just like the neighbours beside it...its not rocket science; but if your the type to struggle with simple repairs, hire a pro. This video tutorial might help a bit, but if your piano is decent don't toss your tools around on the piano like the youtube teacher does, or it will show the abuse....
