I've been using a Yamaha YPT-230 with a generic USB-to-MIDI cable to make MIDI's on my Mac for a month or so now, but as of today, I cannot get it to work. The plugs have a small, buttonless box between the USB and the MIDI ends, with an on light, a USB light, and a MIDI light. When plugged in, only the USB light turns on. The On/Off and MIDI lights don't. I made sure all the connections were secure, that the settings were correct (same settings I've always used), but still nada. I never had to install any drivers, as it was a simple plug-and-play adapter. In Audio-MIDI setup, it says that it recognizes the USB device, but it will not turn on at all. Is the piano broken, or is the cable broken?

Have you tried reversing the MIDI IN/OUT connectors? I know this may sound trivial, but it's a surprisingly common mistake.

Perhaps try some MIDI diagnostics software to check whether or not data is being sent/received.

Failing that, you may have to bite the bullet and purchase a new cable/adaptor.

Also, try unplugging the cable at both ends, and powering down the keyboard and PC.

Yes, I've tried that a bunch of times. It seems that the cable just isn't recognizing the piano at all.

I would get a pair of Bright Eyes and test the cable. They plug in each end and light up if all is well.

I have the same problem with my MIDI to USB cable (M-Audio Midisport Uno) when I use it with Yamaha P250 - it does not work. The USB light is on but the MIDI lights are not. I've checked the settings on the Yamaha.

However the cable works fine with my Nord Stage 2 and with the board we have in our band rehearsal (cant remember the brand and model but it is VERY old).

I'm very interested if you solve this! PM me smile

I'm pretty sure the problem is not the cable. Although I must say that your situation is a bit different since it used to work fine.

I had a 7 yo Yamaha which was no longer recognized by the computer. Even the set up disc was no good. Perhaps old Yamahas and computers do not mix? I tried upgrading, but - too technical for me!

Whatever the manufacturer, check their website for updated USB drivers and make sure that you tell whatever software you're using to use that driver as the MIDI In/Out device.
