The Reverb on my Yamaha PSR 225 does sound good but adjusting the amount/depth is a bit of a chore ( so much better if it had been fitted with a slider or knob), but, particularly when playing thru headphones, I sometimes think its a bit fake. An acoustic upright wouldnt have Reverb like that unless it were in a large hall. Do you play with or without Reverb, and other DSP settings? (It has quite a comprehensive DSP but it cancels when you change voice)

I use heavy reverb just for kicks every now and again but mainly use just a slight reverb, perhaps a small room or equivalent, just to add some depth to the sound like you would hear playing an acoustic in a nice room. Using too much generally muddies the sound and gives you a bad perception when using the damper pedal.

Thats the other aspect that I havent experienced-pedals!
Also the keys are far lighter than an acoustic. I worry that when I get competent on this keyboard, and I get an upright sometime down the line, I'm gonna have to get used to proper weighted keys!
I also need to tweak the touch response. It has 3 levels and at its default setting its hard to play with a consistant 'weight'.

There's no real way of getting yourself ready to adjust to a heavier action, adjusting the sensitivity wouldn't simulate weighted keys it would just be the same as slamming the keys on a lighter weighted piano to try and gear yourself up for playing a heavier action. I remember when I first got my Roland digital many years ago I couldn't leave the damper pedal alone and everything just sounded like a mushy mess.

So how does the feel of the CDP100 keyboard compare to an acoustic?

Whilst it feels far from an acoustic it is weighted quite heavily compared to similar DPs I've tried, the keys don't immediately spring back up upon release but obviously there is no escapement mechanism as the CDP100 costs £300 so ridiculously fast key repetition is impossible, however it is great for pretty much everything I've tried to play on it.

When I went to London a few weeks ago to try out pianos at different showrooms I did notice the difference with regards to the relationship between key pressure and dynamics which I put down to the fact I use my CDP100 on my laptop with Logic Pro with different settings etc etc. I played a Yamaha C3X, C1X, GC1, GC2 and GB1K and did notice that I had to be conscious of the pressure I was applying to the keys to play pianissimo whereas on a Steinway M it was a lot easier to control.

It certainly sounds very good! And obsolete now so maybe plenty out there S/H!

Must admit to using heavy reverb; gives it a sort of AP resonance specially when recorded . . I have 26 different reverbs on board including the Grand Canyon . . .!

I got a setting that I liked, reverb level 12. It goes up to 127. The only problem is I cant get my keyboard to save its user settings. I think the onboard battery must be a goner

i don't like reverb - i never use it for normal playing

If I want a more natural sound in mid regs, I do not use it on my N1. For the bass and high regs, a 9/20 reverb level (for N1) makes you feel in a mid sized hall and does sound nice. More than 9 is a little extreme and sounds not very natural for my taste

See the default piano setting in my keyboard is really high, like a grand in an auditorium. But an upright in an average room (i.e. small) wouldnt there be hardly any reverb at all?

After changing my mind many times about the reverb on or off choice, I concluded that the sound is too bare and unnatural without it, so I eventually had to make peace with my DP's reverb.

The best results I got from my DP are with a 'room' type reverb kept at a moderate level (like 16-20 out of a 128 level scale).
The reverb doesn't sound fake with these settings and the overall sound is more pleasing and realistic than without it.

Reverb levels are a matter of taste. I prefer some reverb than having a dry sound but that's just me.

Do what you like ... and if others think the levels are too high, adjust accordingly.
