In the film Shine the young pianist is advised not to learn the Rachmaninov piece because as a boy he won't be able to cope with the emotional content.
Well I don't know how many people feel this but when listening to certain pieces on CD I get a strong emotional response. Sometimes its so powerful I feel close to tears. One example is the so called Albinoni Adagio. I dont often play the piece of music because the feeling can be really intense. Another is Debussy's Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun. When I listen to that I get a strange feeling within, not sad but a similar emotion. Almost like overwhelming I suppose. Now I just played the first bars of Prelude on my keyboard, just the right hand, and the feeling came to me, not as strong, but like an adrenaline rush and I had to switch to Ode to Joy.
Does anyone else experience strong emotions like this when listening to or playing certain pieces?

Does anger count as a genuine emotion?

Well yes it does. I've not encountered it myself when listening to music. I do feel it when I see genuinely talented musicians struggling to get a deal when talentless pop paraders get all the glory!

Ok.. I was just kidding there..

To be honest, I think I get more emotional over music than most people I know . And it's usually movie scores, obviously you get more emotional when watching the movie. As far as classical, there haven't been any pieces that have brought me near to tearing up( but maybe that's just my limited exposure to what's out there).

How about the Visconti movie Death in Venice (starring Dirk Bogarde), when Mahler's Adagietto from his 5th Symphony is played as the protagonist dies a truly horrible death from cholera? wink

My trouble is I'm over sensitive. Certain films get me, its ridiculous!
I read Tchaikovsky's biography and at a young age he first heard Mozart. He ran upstairs in tears! I'm not that bad but I can relate!

Yes! I find I get it more with Baroque music, for some reason. Possibly because the rhetoric is less 'pushy' than lots of the canon, so I feel like it leaves you more room to respond rather than just sit there while the music emotes all over you. :P

Playing through the Bach Busoni Wachet Auf, I invariably get it, or the fugue in E major from Bk II of the WTC.

Tendre Amour from Les Indes Galantes in Les Arts Florissants' production always gets me too.

Another one is Schumann's Geistervariationen, which is 'Romantic' but has always felt very reserved to me.

Aaaaand playing the piano part of the Louanges in the Quartet for the End of Time (but not listening). It's like being in some amazing ritual...
