I'm going to be visiting that wonderful city in a couple of weeks and wondered if there are any downtown piano dealers that might make practice pianos available on a rental basis.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for any and all help.

Politely spoken. Considering the cost of digital pianos/keyboards with weighted 88 keys new and used and weighing around 30-35 pounds why don't people rent or buy one and take it with them anywhere they go in the world.

Having said that, being anywhere - you are looking for music stores, musical events to see or hear and at the end of the day one is tired and their feet are sore from seeing the sights around they are visiting. In fairness - looking for a piano could be for competitions. But a digital you know - yours - is better than a piano you can't find in a foreign city.

Micheal, that's a nice idea, but you can't really take a dp anywhere in the world - (if it were possible, I'd do it!) --- Unless you're going on short trips by car, I'd say it is really impractical. The weight is too much for carry on, not to mention the awkward size, and I certainly wouldn't put a dp in stowed luggage, you'd need a special resistant case! Not only that, but you'd have to pay for an extra bag with pretty well every airline.

CsscLib --- you might want to ask this over in the Piano Forum where there are more dealers.

Good luck!

Farm Girl, thanks so much for your PM -- will look into that.

Michael, if I can't line up an acoustic piano to play, I may take a digital.

I agree with Casini, though -- flying with an 88-key digital is not all that easy (or cheap!), especially if one is traveling on business and making multiple stops.

Thanks for the ideas -- please keep them coming!

The people in the place i mentioned are so kind. They may not have the best piano but you can at least practice. Hope it works out.

Just a suggestion. But, you may want to look ahead at churches in the area and send them an email.

I used one for almost a year in the chapel on the AF Base where I work.

Where are you staying? You might be able to find a hotel that has a piano. I was at the Hyatt in Palm Desert last month, and made $7 in tips without really trying.... ;-)

Salt Lake City would be a bit more difficult for me. Churches, schools, and gin joints are the big three, and in my case for stylistic reasons, mostly gin joints, which they ain't got there....

How big is 'downtown' for you?

John and Malkin, I'm very excited to be staying again at the Grand America Hotel in SLC -- 555 South Main. It's one of my favorite hotels in the world -- lovely, big rooms, great amenities, and quite unpretentious.

So that may give you a better idea of where I'll be than I have myself!

I will not have a car, so except to the extent I can take cabs (which I'm willing to do), downtown will be pretty small for me.

Thanks for your interest.

Ooh, the Grand is quite nice. They also have a reputation for taking their customer service quite seriously. Give the concierge a call and see what they can do for you.

Day Murray Music rents studios upstairs over their shop; I don't know anything about their rates or availability.
I'm not sure about availability at the piano shops either. Baldassin is close to where you'll be downtown (and they are wonderful!), Daynes, Summerhays, Piano Gallery are further away, but you can google them and call and ask. The University of Utah and the Salt Lake Community College music departments are possibilities. If you are interested in hitting up the U, you could also try the Preparatory Division, which may not have a fee schedule set up, but they probably would not refuse a donation.

Good luck!
We're having great weather right now. I hope it holds out for a while--like maybe 6 months or so!
