.............memory
I know the piece. I can play the piece perfectly. I play the piece everyday. I can play the piece hundreds of times perfectly. At the recital I couldn't remember some of the piece I know perfectly.

+1 Weiyan! What a great thought! I'll have to say that perfection has never been my strong point. I'm just not temperamentally inclined to it - stresses me out in everything I try it in. I practice well, and carefully, so that I have a good foundation, but in performance, well - Chutzpah is the name of the game Life, dancing, joy - let's hear it for recovering from mistakes! Go, Michael! Cathy

How awful for you. If you are relying on muscle memory alone, that will happen. You might try doing some analysis such as knowing some of the chords or memorizing some of the starting notes. It also helps to have many starting places memorized with note or chord names so when you get lost, you can easily pick it up again. A good way to check your memory is to play the piece very slowly in chunks, starting from the end and working backwards.
Best regards,
Deborah

Along those lines, I recently learned the piano solo introduction to "Every Day I Have The Blues" that Ray Charles plays in the movie "Ray", where he is left behind because he is blind by his bandmates who are going to a party. (If you are familiar with the movie, it looks like Jamie Foxx is playing that solo, but he is faking it...Ray Charles recorded it earlier for the movie.) It was difficult; I wanted to play it exactly as Ray does. To accomplish it I had to write it out, note for note, in chunks. The result: It is absolutely one of the most solid things in my musical memory. I can play it at any time, in front of people, starting anywhere, on any piano, without having to think about it. It is so solid in my memory, its like if someone asks me what is 2 + 2...that solid. Here is a link to the intro, with the rest of the song performed by, and sung, by Chris Thomas King, who filled the role of Lowell Fulson, whose band Ray Charles was playing at that early point in his career. Fulson wrote the song, which became a Blues standard: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1XinKoZPrE

I've been told this is the way to really, really know a piece but the task seems so daunting. I'm in awe of your patience! One question, were you copying the score or writing it down from memory? I really don't know if I could do the latter.
Best regards,
Deborah

I really don't know if I could do the latter. There is no score that I know of. What I did was audio copy the song using my phone from the DVD of the movie. Later I found out that it is on a CD, known as "more from Ray" or something like that, so I got the CD. In each case, I loaded small chunks of it into a slower-downer machine, and picked out the notes one by one. Google "Amazing Slower-Downer" ....lots of apps and machines do it. Some are called "Guitar trainers". As for patience...I am so in love with that piece, it is one of the most beautiful piano Blues I have heard, so it truly was a labor of love. The amazing thing is, like a piece of Classical music, it is possible to play it just as Ray did. It is a slow piece, and not really super-hard. Plus, it actually sounds even better, IMHO, on a slightly out of tune piano, or an older junky one, so it fits well with street pianos, and other misc. PSOs. And yes, I too have heard it is the best way to learn, and it sure seems like it is.

This is my number one problem right now. You can play it fine but during performance nerves get to you and memory starts slipping. I don't know if this helps but I've been paying careful attention to my hands during practice, this will hopefully help me remember the notes securely. sometimes during practice I get "lazy" and look away a lot and letting muscle memory do the work. You can use muscle memory as a "safety net" during performance but I always always look at the keys now.

Are you on a tear today and yesterday or something Polyphonist? Your posts are sort of negative in several threads - actually a little condescending, from my point of view. I actually thought peterws was funny, seeing as how I'm in my 60's and he's exactly right I suppose you see it differently, but a couple of other people have mentioned your posts, too. Hm. At any rate, I guess I don't come into threads with expectations I like Michael's posts, I don't really expect necessarily a back-and-forth, more like a general discussion, from which I learn a lot, or laugh, or nod in understanding. Just me of course Cathy

Just me of course Cathy I did post something a little insulting in one thread, which I later edited and apologized for. Apart from that, I don't think I've been particularly negative. Sorry if you see it that way. (And peterws's post did come off as impolite to me.)

Cathy, I read your post, here:
Another poem, Michael? You have a very clean, clear voice in it.
i didn't do anything like this in my life before.
yes, I love playing the piano; but the posters have such interesting things to say about their lives as struggling piano players that it causes me to be moved to pen and paper.
Cathy, I was devastated when I saw that someone had posted that they were sorry I was sad.

Michael - I think people will get used to knowing that you post poetry - especially if you continue to use the long string of dots to introduce them. But don't feel bad that someone didn't realize it - it was a poem that rang true. And posters here really do feel for each other Keep up the good work. I had another wonderful couple of hours of practice today, too. Cathy

Some of us can't play by memory, and I am one of them. And Frankly Scarlet...
