Arguably the greatest orchestral musician of the twentieth century and likely the best symphonic trumpet player ever:

We won't see another like him.

I find it interesting how people post topics, the titles of which begin with the letters "OT", indicating they realize the post is off topic, but then neglect to observe that there are multiple designated forums on this site in which to post the elusive "OT" threads.

Where???

There aren't.
Or if there are, not many of us know about them. Or anyway I can say this: I have 10 billion posts, and I don't know about them. grin

And besides, this is pretty on-topic for an "OT" post....

The reason the title begins with "OT" is to indicate that reading the post isn't absolutely mandatory. If you choose not to read something I've posted, I'll feel hurt, but I may recover in a few years.

In the meantime, I have noted that a lot of pianists on this forum are devotees of symphonic music, and many also play orchestral instruments. The post was for them and need not detain those whose interests are narrower.

Have a nice day, though, okay?

I, for one, very much appreciated your post, as I hadn't seen this news. In my younger years I also played the trumpet, and I've been a fan of the Chicago brass sound since I was around 14 and my counselor at Brevard, a tuba player, made me listen to a CSO recording of Pictures at an Exhibition and the Britten Young Person's Guide. I was hooked.

Herseth's wife taught me Sunday School. They were college sweethearts in Iowa, I believe, and stayed together forever.

It was always special to attend a Christmas or Easter service at that Gothic stone church in suburban Chicago and find him in the pit band for some cantata.

And I find it interesting how people feel compelled to make comments like the above. smile

When the first post of a thread includes "OT" in the title, I do wonder what "topic" has been shunted aside, since the topic has yet to be established.

I suppose that some think that every thread should be about piano and piano music, but I think that "OT" is more appropriately used when a poster, after a thread's matter for discussion has been established, introduces a new, unrelated topic.

However, the "wisdom" of this forum seems to dictate to many that any thread not about piano music in its broadest aspects must be designated as "off topic."

Many of us do have other musical interests and are not solely focused on music for piano or the performance of it.

Regards,

I'm glad some found this of interest. I only met Mr. Herseth a few times, but I knew many of his students and colleagues. From all I saw and heard, besides being an astonishingly great musician, he was a truly wonderful human being.

Here's a link to a terrific NPR retrospective on Herseth's career:

http://www.npr.org/blogs/deceptivec...-the-chicago-sound-trumpeter-bud-herseth

I might add, if this is needed to qualify the post, that Herseth supported quite a few pianists who played concerti with the Chicago Symphony over his fifty-plus-year career. smile
