Does anyone know if a high gloss finish can easily be made satin? A friend of mine just got a used Yamaha U3 in high gloss but prefers something less 'shiney'.

There is no magic wand solution. It takes work, and the results depend on how careful one is.

It is a lot of work, but can be done.

Key word in your question is "easily". Nothing is easy with a polyester finish. You should definitely consult with a professional furniture refinisher - this is not a do-it-yourself project.

Lower wattage light bulbs and shades on the windows...
that is the easy way to reduce the sheen.

I agree about a pro-refinisher since the piano needs disassembled to be done. We use 5000 grit wet sanding pads to do some de-glossing but you need to know how to use them.

Someone brought me a SD-6 9 ft Baldwin grand lid that looked like an airplane landed on it last year, the result of someone doing home de-glossing with a scotch-brite pad.

Polyester will turn grey and look like automotive primer when sanded. If you like that Rat-Rod look?

The other thing is Re-sale, you mess with a decent factory finish and suddenly need to sell? It could be hard to sell it then.
