I've posted here several times over the past year about the trials and tribulations of tracking down a Steinway B that I could actually afford. I even worked with a broker for several months, but that relationship ended abruptly when I refused to "settle" and was subjected to a condescending lecture on the gentle art of compromise yawn After enduring an endless procession of duds and disappointments, I was lucky enough to receive a lead on a local 1993 B that hadn't been played by its 91 year old owner in almost a decade!

Even out of tune, this piano had a gorgeous velvety "darkness" that far surpassed anything I heard in even the new pianos of many brands that I auditioned. After a few days of tense negotiations with family members, the deal was struck.

We sweated bullets through the delivery 10 days ago; too long by an inch to fit sideways, it had to be "keyboarded" into the elevator, a process that's just plain painful to watch! The obligatory pitch-raising and tuning went really well (meaning the piano sounds even more amazing!); voicing and regulation happen later this week, with cabinet buffing a little further down the line.

If you're on the hunt, don't let anyone (yourself included) talk you into compromising--follow the dream and hold out for the piano that speaks to your soul, even if it is a gem in the rough when you find it smile

Settling is bad. Especially when you don't have to. Good job!

Looks beautiful, and Bs are very nice to play. Care to share how much you paid for the piano?

Does this mean that the piano had to stand vertically on its keyboard?

Congratulations - ec !!!! Enjoy - Enjoy - Enjoy

Malkin - that's exactly what it means. It is not as unusual as you would think.

A couple of folks have PMd me about the price. I'm loathe to post the final figure, but suffice it to say that I could have paid a dealer much more for a piano of a similar age. Most important to me was that the piano felt and sounded like it could be mine, so we decided to go for it. We're (my sweet husband & I) also spending what's required to bring it to top form (as my RPT says, to make it the "piano of my dreams")

Yes-they did try to squeeze it into the elevator on its side (to save us $200) but there was just too much there for the door to close. It took a LONG time to upend it safely and was agonizing to watch (I took some video but it needs editing). Only after it was safely ensconced in our living room did the lead mover confess that he's been moving pianos for 35 years!

As you certainly know, one of the key factors in choosing a piano is finding one that feels and sounds like what you have in your mind as THE sound for you. You took your time and were very picky. This is exactly what is needed and I congratulate you for being patient! I purchased a "B" a little over a year ago and just love it. Even when I have a busy day and not enough time to sit and play, I just go over, play a few arpeggios and voila' I feel uplifted and happy. It was not an inexpensive gift to myself, but a lot cheaper than years of therapy! grin
