I just got a new 5 year old student who is very hyper. Smart kid, can do good work but literally has a hard time sitting still. Obviously he's only five so I don't see much of anything wrong with that, but I need some suggestions for what to do when he is away from the piano. He only plays for me for about 15-20 minutes per class. The other ten minutes are listening, singing, etc with me playing. Anyone recommend any good songs to do with him where he can move? So far I have done Hokey Pokey but that's really all I know. Any good books/songs I should look into?

Here are a few ideas off the top of my head:

1. Freeze Dance - when you play piano, he dances. When the music stops, he freezes.
2. Stepping the rhythm of pieces he already plays, and ones he hasn't started yet (step across the room)
3. He's a seed and he grows when the notes get higher.
4. Forte vs piano - child makes his body small when you play softly and big when you play loud
5. Put musical alphabet cards around the room - student runs and gets a card and then finds that note on the piano (you could time him to see how long it takes).
6. Rhythm cards - use rhythm sticks, egg shakers etc

I believe the Music for Little Mozarts series has a Discovery book that uses music and movement activities like you describe. I have used other books from that series, but not the Discovery book. It might be worth checking out. Good luck!

One of my favourites is the high/low game, where you play two groups of black keys and ask him which is higher (first or second). He can jump up (high) or curl into a little ball (low) to add movement. Some of my students like to do this back to me (i.e. they play the notes and I tell them high or low).

Going up/going down is similar, where you play a bunch of notes going up or going down, and they can tell you which it is. Start with scales, then move to arpeggios, etc.

Happy/sad - major/minor; this is always a challenge.

I let the students look at my fingers, and move onto the next level where they can't look.
