Hi, I need to buy a piano for my 6 year old son. He has not started piano yet, will buy one first. My budget is 6k.
I can either buy a brandnew Kawai k3 or a used hybrid piano. It's a 3 year old Yamaha N3. I can buy it with $6K no warranty. I saw N3 at a dealer and feel very impressed. I feel concerned if I should let my son start with a hybrid piano, not acoustic one. Is the finger touch different? I heard Yamaha N3 touch very good.
Any suggestion? Thanks

Why not start (test the water) by renting a piano?
The advantage of the N3 is the capability to play with headphones and not disturb sleeping family or neighbours. What reasons do you have for considering the N3.
Whatever you decide it sounds like quite an investment to start a child with (good for you) especially if he prefers ... football, guitar, .... Therefore renting might be better for the first year, or something much more modestly priced but still suitable for a beginner.

I would go with a new K3. But be aware that an acoustic piano needs regular tuning service (depending on circumstances, e.g. the climate you are living in, once or twice a year). The hybrid does not. Both will need regulation of the action every few years, but I would leave that out of consideration for now (however if the N3 offered to you is used you should make sure that the action is well in order).
Overall, the learning experience on an acoustic piano is MUCH more satisfying, and more challenging at the same time; there is a lot more going on between the keys and the sound than in any hybrid piano so far. If your son has good ears he will hear it, and enjoy an acoustic a lot more.

At $6000, I'd say the N3 would hold that value longer and I think repetitive exercises seem to go more smoothly on N3. I have an N2 and find it easier to stay focused and you could control the volume (or headphones could be used,) which might be good for family life.

Why not start (test the water) by renting a piano? I agree. Your son is six years old and unless he shows some exceptional musical talent you would be better served by renting.
