I can seem to play along with recordings of Evidence but at gig, I still can't nail the rhythms. Any suggestions? mind tricks?

Not sure if it will help but I see the whole A as 1 bar of 4/4 followed by 4 bars of 3/4 so counting from measure 2, you are hitting

(1) & 2 & 3 (&) |1 & 2 & 3 (&) |1 & 2 & 3 & |(1) & (2) & 3 &|

Starting from measure 5 you are hitting

(1) & 2 (&) (3) & |1 & 2 & (3) & |1 & 2 (&) (3) (&) |1 & 2 & 3 & |

As you can see, the first part there is an emphasis on & of 3 and the 2nd part has emphasis on 3rd beat(if you think of & of 2 as a pickup to 3) in 3/4.

I can't say that Monk is actually thinking in 3 but there are plenty of tunes out there that do have a polyrhtym or different groupings of subdivisions in mind (i.e middle section of Bill Evan's Peri's Scope is kind of in 3)so it might help to identify them.
