Here we are! Another rather stupid thread I have started because I have too much time on my hands.

Let's start with Opus 1...that would be Rach 1 for me, no competition.

This doesn't give us a lot of choices.

Hmmm, toss-up between Chopin's Rondo and the pair of Etudes by de Schloezer?

Or do the 'rules' here extend to chamber, symphonic and non-piano music, too?

I'm not sure I understand. We're advancing one by one? Or just throwing op. numbers at each other?

If it's the latter then Op. 100, Prokofiev's 5th symphony!

EDIT: Ah... now I get it. When we reach op. 100 let me know! :P

Easy:

Beethoven: Piano Trios
Schumann: ABEGG Variations
Elgar: Wand of Youth Suites

All works I love, though in the case of the Elgar, they are arrangements of tunes he wrote as a boy, though not published for full orchestra until 1907. (He did, however, assign an Op 1 designation.)

I once heard a crackling performance of the Beethoven Eb Trio (Op 1 #1) on a rainy afternoon in London at St. Bride Fleet Street. The pianist -a young lad of around 18- was excellent.

S.3 is clearly Liszt's great masterpiece 'Christus.'

Or are we just doing Op. numbers?

I also love Rachmaninoff's Morceaux de Fantasie.

Anyway, for Op. 1 I really like Brahms' first piano sonata. I like Rach's first PC, also.

Op. 2 goes to Beethoven's wonderful Op. 2 No. 3.

All right, let's move on to Opus 2.

Beethoven's is the best I can think of now. Chopin's is also a nice piece. Rachmaninov has a couple beautiful cello and piano pieces for Opus 2. There's also the Brahms 2nd Sonata and a Mendelssohn Piano Quartet.

Almost everyone is going to have the same answer for 52 and 111 if we get that far.

Would assume you meant '53'. Op 52 is a set of 8 Lieder.

As I mentioned before, Rachmaninoff.

That's if we're not including S numbers, or BWV's, or D.***, in which case I have to choose Liszt's Christus.

For the so-called 'middle period' works, I wouldn't argue!

There's Chopin's Introduction and Polonaise for cello and piano, another piano quartet from Mendelssohn, songs from Brahms, and of course Rachmaninov's great set of miniatures.

You shouldn't. ha

The Liszt Sonata is another monumental work, but it's an S number (178).

All right, let's do Opus 4. There's Chopin's early C minor sonata, Schumann's Intermezzi, a scherzo from Brahms. There's also Hummel's cadenzas to Mozart's concertos (those don't really count though).

Are we really deciding which is the greatest, or just listing pieces? I'm not sure about my preference for this opus. It's pretty obscure.

From now on, let's count S and D and K numbers and get everything into the mix; that will make it a lot more interesting. Hello Schubert, Mozart, Bach, Liszt!

Great idea for a thread, Polyphonist.

Alas, I have to be at work very early tomorrow, so will have to take my leave and miss out on the fun. tiki

Two Schumann impromptus, two Beethoven cello sonatas, Chopin"Rondo a la mazur" (an interesting early work).

This would probably go to the Chopin, just because I happen to like it. laugh
