Hey guys,

This is a draft of an arrangement of the A minor Bach invention that I just finished writing. Here is the score:

Any comments/suggestions are welcome. smile

(It probably looks a bit weird because it's four separate screenshots one on top of the other.)

That's quite interesting!

Some notes on the score, cause I can't sit and play through right now to provide further thoughts on the playability, etc:

1. The triplets in page 2 and further could actually be 6plets, thus avoiding half the numbers and brackets. The accent and pulse would remain the same and you'd keep the 4th pules.

2. The broken chords in b. 19 could be notated much better with a cross-staff tool. And to ditch the rests as well.

3. b. 8, 11, 12 with the rest and the triplet underneath. I would imagine that normally in that period and for notation reasons mostly, rather than much else you wouldn't have a rest, but the triplet would have for its first note the same as the layer/voice above. I think it'd look much clearer.

4. At some points they are quite tight. Perhaps reduce the staff size by 0,1 or 0,2?

5. Line up any dynamics that are missing each other (vertically), and make sure the dynamics are in the centre part of both staves, not too close in the one above, or the one bellow, unless you're referring to a specific voice in that place.

6. measure 10, right hand. The F there is a sharp (#) right? If so, since it's on a different octave (due to the 8va sign) it would be wise to show it again, in order to avoid any confusion.

7. Since you're adding slurs and some more specific dynamics in your part, why not do the same with Bachs part (the first two systems)? And what about staccato notes? None in the score (just checking)...

That's all I can see right now.

I've fixed most of the errors you pointed out. I'm going to try and get an mp3 of it up to listen to while you follow the score.

I think the biggest danger so far is that as you leave the traditional arrangement and into your own, you are losing the imitative nature of the two voices. It is certainly virtuosic but you are losing your melody in the right hand by obscuring the mode and the motifs which might kill the two part invention technique. Also there are significant melody changes in the left hand that might make this unrecognizable after a few bars. It might be better to try to embellish the voice, play with the rhythm, and then make sure the imitative spots are preserved by making sure the other voice can do the same thing. Even if it is a retrograde or a slight rhythm change. You wouldn't want your listener to think that you have abandoned the piece entirely and went off on your own improvisation.

So I will put my money where my mouth is this weekend and post a suggestion via manuscript.

Very interesting. Haven't tried playing it, but just reading through it. I notice that you go back to the original version in mm. 16-17. Perhaps it makes perfect sense when listening to it or playing it, yet I'm just curious. Was that done to remind the listener of the original?

Tremelos in mm 20-21 are very dramatic in a classical style. And the alternating 32nds in m. 19 remind me of Beethoven.
