The RD-700NX was released in September 2010, so I'm wondering if we should expect a replacement model this year. Looking at the history of the SX, GX, and NX, Roland released a new model every 2-3 years. They did just release the v2 upgrade in September, but they released the NX only 9 months after the SN upgrade was released for the GX.

RD-700SX - January 2005
RD-700GX - January 2008
RD-700GX SN upgrade - January 2010
RD-700NX - September 2010
RD-700NX v2 - September 2012

In the current economic climate (I wish those rich guys running the world banking system would lighten up already) I'm thinking 2014 before the NX is really upgraded. I really hope the next one is 100% SN (with: new AP voices, improved EPs, music rest, sans joystick in the keybed making it a reasonable length, and a boxier form factor would be most welcome) - I'd be all over it.

Isn't a replacement due this year since the FP-50 and FP-80 are out now?

Bah don't hold your breath! The P155 will never be replaced. The bloke at Dawsons reckons the Yamaha factory accidentally put a 0 on the end of the production run and they have stacks of them to sell before they'll upgrade it.

Or even worse it will be replaced about a week or so after you give in and stop waiting and buy the current model. Bleedin' thing happened with me CDP 2 newer updated models came out about 2 weeks after.

I personally like the pitchbend/modulation joystick, making it a more versatile controller. I can understand your point of view though if you never use it.

I'd love to buy one now, but I'd kick myself if a new one was released in 6 months with major improvements.

They won't get rid of the joystick. After all the work they put in to this being as synth-like and controllable as possible, getting rid of the joystick/pitchbend would be, well, counterproductive. It's a serious instrument designed to cover a wide range of players. The extra length added to a keyboard due to pitch/mod wheels never really bothered me. Usually it's the width/depth that becomes troublesome.

Of course, my keyboards are long AND wide/deep AND heavy, but I'm still young. They'll likely die or find permanent residence in a music room before I become unable to handle them.

The new rd700 when it arrives should have the v piano engine. Anything less than this will not be acceptable. It's time for the v piano to come to the HP series as well.

Put the V piano in the Hp series and get rid of the hard bottoming out key action.
That will stop me buying a acoustic and I will stick with the digital.

Maybe they'll upgrade the V-Piano first and then upgrade the RD series. To me sounds more logical, because then, the features of the replacement for the V-Piano will be better than the replacement of RD and the RD would be a stripped down version of the new V-Piano, with almost everything the old RD and old V-Piano had, new action, maybe even some new features of the new V-Piano. Maybe more features, new samples, even a new keyboard action and better than the current RD.

I think the updates would be minor, like the differences between the FP-7f and FP-80. The Integra 7 is Roland's flagship sound engine (excluding the V-Piano), but it doesn't have anything new in acoustic piano sounds. Maybe some of the other SuperNatural tones would be brought over to the RD from the Integra. They would probably also make it a full features controller for the Integra, like they did with the A-49 and A-88 controllers.

Isn't the A-88 + Integra & an iPad a bit of RD successor ? I know the keybed is not on par with the rd700nx , but that's a compromise that seems necessary to reduce weight ( a request of many RD users).

As you pointed out, the A-88 keybed isn't as nice, otherwise I'd go that route. I think they're reserving the premium keybed and the Studio Grand SN tone for the RD.

We'll , there are on sale here and dealers seem to take no new stock, so something must be cooking. Personally I don't expect it anytime soon though. probably after the summer (september ?). And they will not be the only one updating their product portfolio..

Strongly agree. I'd like to own a Roland without waking up the neighbours at night even while using headphones. I can't believe someone at the company didn't mention this problem before they went to production.

Maybe because it's not much louder than an silent acoustic? I've compared it with a yamaha B2 silent, and the roland didn't sound much noiser.

I decided I'm going to wait for the RD-700NX replacement. I'm not desperate to buy right now, and I suspect that at the latest a new model will be released by Winter NAMM. Hopefully I'm not wrong, or then maybe I'll be waiting another year. Hopefully it will be released in September, like the current model was.

Maybe Summer NAMM in July. Regardless, I think we will see many new releases before 2013 is over.

I hope the replacement is a studio piano rather than the current RD700NX stage piano. The NEW studio piano will also have digital audio out through USB that will go into a DAW, Digital Audio Workstation.

You hope that Roland introduces yet another upright digital piano, and cancels their flagship digital stage piano?

Let me rephrase myself. grin laugh Just add digital audio out from the RD700nx replacement. I hope this does not offend anyone.

I love the RD700nx. heart Just the feel of the keys is enough to get me excited. eek 3hearts should have bought one years ago but now that we are so near to a new and possibly better RD700NX replacement I might as well be patient and wait. sleep

Speaking of digital out, I suspect the RD-700NX's USB recording is not digital: I think it goes digital - analog - digital. There is noise in the silence ...

I had a really nice dream that I bought the new RD700nx replacement and it included the Imperfect Samples' Steinway 1908 Walnut Concert Grand http://www.imperfectsamples.com/website/samples/steinwayconcertgrand/steinwaygrandpiano.php
and then I woke up!!! frown

What would be improved on the RD700NX, the action or the sound or features or cosmetics?

My concern is for the sound if they can include some great piano samples or physical modeling engine so that no need for VSTi (to $ave on the purchase of VSTi’s). If this is the case then a digital audio out for recording.

And since I already love the action of the RD700nx this is my second request if they can make it a bit better especially in the playing of low velocities.

Obviously this should be available tomorrow at the Summer 2013 NAMM show.

On Roland Connect it seems they are only releasing new guitar amplifiers for Summer NAMM... unless they have another surprise they are waiting to show.

Darn it. Looks like a wait to September. Who was it that predicted Sept?

The additional improvement of the RD700NX will have to do with iPad. So sound, action and iPad. grin

Personally I just witnessed a price fall in almost every shop for the 700nx, maybe the shops know something that we don't!

(£2150 fell to £1999)

£1999 used to be for ex-display stuff too.

I would really love to get a Roland RD-700NX and have been trying them out in the store and researching them on line and they're pretty impressive. But I keeping hearing about people having problems with the "hard bottoming out key action" as this writer describes it. The first time I was trying them out myself in the store I remember being disturbed by the noise and when I mentioned it to the salesman he kind of brushed it off, saying something to the effect of "that sound is much louder on an acoustic piano, you just can't hear it for the sound of the strings". Which may be true, but I hear about people who find their apartment neighbours are disturbed by that sound which seems to go right through the instrument and into the floor below. I have a nice little Roland FP-4 which has none of that thudding sound, or very little, so I'm reluctant to move up to the RD-700 if I'm going to have trouble. Does anybody have any advice for me ?
